Future's Fall #2

Into the Dark: A Post Apocalyptic Adventure

Rate this book
Thirty-five years after the world ended, a lonely man picks his way across the ashes of America on a final mission.

Reuben Bane spent decades believing he was a force for good, preserving humanity's gene pool by hunting and eliminating deviants.

Now, he seeks redemption for his evil deeds, and revenge on the cultish Foundation. He must travel across a broken country to find a woman from the past who holds the key to the future.

After the End is the first book in a new series by Kevin Partner, veteran of the post apocalyptic science fiction genre.
Set among the ashes of a destroyed world, the series brings to life a possible future world teetering on the brink between endless darkness and an uncertain future.

I write post apocalyptic science fiction both on my own account and with Mike Kraus, as well as space opera and fantasy. And one or two other bits and bobs.

Based in the south of England, I've been writing since my teens, alternating between funny and serious. In the mid 1990s, I became a regular columnist for PC Pro magazine and have written a number of business and craft books over the years.

Fiction is my first love, however - I hope you enjoy my voyages into an uncertain future.

I think this is one of the most realistic style apocalyptic books I have read. Reuben is trying to do the 'right' thing and running into all manner of nasty, greedy people. He seems to attract the underdogs and gets himself into all manner of dangerous situations. I am praying he makes it. The world needs a good man.

I received this book for free and wished to leave a review.

This continues a series based on a prior series of the world devastated by some astronomical, recurring events. It was a bit since I read book 1, so I appreciate the "story so far" recap at the beginning. I tend to be a sucker for redemption tales, so Reuben Bane is an appealing character, as are the collection of companions that he gathers on the way to complete his quest. I also dislike bullies, especially ones using religion as a cudgel. Good combination that, plus we find a new, ominous threat from the west. There were some editing issues, like Reuben being spelled Ruben, but not terribly distracting. I am a bit bothered by the "science" of the original event (possibly a GRB) that continues to be an issue almost 40 years later. I do look forward to Reuben and friends continuing their journey.

Into The Dark - a review by Rosemary Kenny.

MC Reuben Bane homages Clint Eastwood's William Munny in Unforgiven, and Hugh Jackman in Wolverine, as both are seeking self-absolution for past misdeeds by helping others in desperate need.
In Bane's instance, salvation will come when he saves Hannah Myers, finds her missing son Roberto and brings down Carver and his evil, elitist cult.
How does Bane help mutant Asha and former Foundation cultist Skeeter to safety?
Can he succeed in his self-appointed quest?

Trapped in Mecklen, scientist Dr. Hannah Myers seeks help from the ousted Mayor Snider. She wants to find her mutant son Roberto and get him to safety, but will Mitch do the right thing?

Into the Dark is an excellent follow-up to After the End, while the first book provides a good introduction to Ruben Bane, this book not only exposes more of his character, but it also provides a deeper look into Rubens traveling companions. Ruben has a knack for attracting strays as he journeys to find Hannah. I’m not sure if this book is better than the first, or if they are equals, what I can say is this series is great and does an outstanding job taking over where the Nightfall series left off. The more of Kevin Partner’s book I read the more I want to explore his back catalogue. I received an Advance Reader Copy from the author and chose to provide this review.

Once again an outstanding book. Danger, intrigue and more to keep you reading. Reuben is searching for Hannah but seems to attract strange people on his journey. Will he find her and will these people be helpful.

I did enjoy the second part to a somewhat twisted dystopian adventure! A very scary religious sect, good strong charters, interesting scenarios & plot! I will for sure read the next part, has me a little intrigued where this will go! Good fun read!

Wow, what a great book. Just what I like, loads of action and great characters, with many twists thrown into the mix!
I like this world, although of course I wouldn't want to live there, and am very glad I don't! But the people are very well thought out and brought to life, quite believable, even the side characters. A lot of stuff happens, and it kept my head down in the book with no problem! I am invested in the characters, as I was sad to get to the ending and cannot wait for the next book! The writing is good, the world is quite possible, and the story is very gripping. Religion and the behaviour of men is quite a theme, and is treated well. But there are many other things covered in this riveting novel.
You do need to have read the first book in this series, and be aware that the endings for the various people are quite cliffhanger-y; you will want to read the next book as I now can't wait to do!

Kevin Partner has been one of my favorite authors for years and Into the Dark definitely reinforces that fact. The MC, Reuben Bane, is looking for redemption and his life in the post-apocalyptic world is trying to charge a huge toll for it. I throughly enjoyed reading books 1-2 and am anxiously awaiting book 3. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did and highly recommend this series be read in order written.
