I had the privilege of seeing William Toms’ speak at this year’s #SMDayPHL conference. This book was given to me as a gift at the conference, and after seeing Toms’ closing presentation, I was very excited to read it!
“(Un) Common Sense: Your Strategy Guide to Creative Freedom” did not disappoint. I enjoyed reading Toms’ strategies for personal branding. Defining yourself based on one of the 12 archetypes was pure genius. I also appreciated the celebrity examples he provided which helped me to put it all into perspective. The tips for creative an effective content strategy were also helpful. I really like how he broke the strategies down by platform and acknowledged that social media is not a one-size-fits-all approach; every platform is different.
One of my favorite parts of this book was Chapter 4 where Tom’s included a breakdown of the different audience participants including innovators, early adopters, the early majority, the late majority, and the laggards. I, like most marketers, have often made the mistake of focusing on the early majority, but after reading this book I realize why it’s more important to focus first on the early adopters.
All in all, “(Un) Common Sense: Your Strategy Guide to Creative Freedom” was a well thought-out book that will serve as an important resource for marketers and creatives alike. The only reason why I gave it 4 stars as opposed to 5 is because there were quite a few typos that were very distracting. This book could benefit from another copy edit.
Incredible book with actionable steps! I would recommend for every creator , this book has the information I’ve paid over $10,000 for , when I tell you this book is truly a gift. Phenomenal insights and frameworks.
