Sherlock Holmes and Irene Adler #2

Christmas at the Saporis

Rate this book
What will the Saporis find under the tree this year—Christmas presents, or family skeletons? In the spirit of the holiday and a wish for familial harmony, Irene Adler persuades her detective husband to invite his brother Mycroft to Christmas luncheon. Holmes had cut ties with his brother when he discovered the machinations Mycroft employed that drove Sherlock and Adler apart for four years. He isn’t really sure this reunion is a great idea, but he can deny his wife nothing. Of course, they can’t tell the children what Mycroft is to them, as that would entail learning that their father is the celebrated detective when they know him simply as Lucca Sapori. And just when they think things may be going better than expected, ghosts of the past crop up in unexpected ways and threaten to ruin the holidays for everyone.

KD Sherrinford was born and raised in Preston, Lancashire, and now resides on The Fylde Coast with her husband John, and their four children.

An avid reader from an early age, KD was fascinated by the stories of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and Agatha Christie, she read the entire Doyle Canon by the time she was 13.

A talented pianist, KD played piano from age six, the music of some of her favourite composers, Beethoven, Schubert, Stephen Foster, and Richard Wagner, all strongly feature in her novel.

KD had a varied early career, working with horses and racing greyhounds, she and her husband won the Blackpool Greyhound Derby in 1987 with Scottie.

Then to mix things up KD joined Countrywide, where she was employed for over 20 years and became a Fellow of The National Association of Estate Agents.

Retirement finally gave KD the opportunity to follow her dreams and start work on her first novel. She gained inspiration to write” Song for Someone” from her daughter Katie, after a visit to the Sherlock Holmes museum on Baker Street in 2019. It had always been a passion to write about Irene Adler, she is such an iconic character, and KD wanted to give her a voice.

KD recently completed her second book in the Sherlock Holmes and Irene Adler mystery series, “Christmas at The Saporis”, and is currently working on the third.

Having read and enjoyed Song for Someone, the first book in this unusual series, I was keen to read the next instalment in Christmas at the Saporis, and what a treat it was. Irene Adler persuades her husband, Lucca Sapori (or Sherlock Holmes, to give him his true identity), to invite his brother, Mycroft, for the festive season. Although reluctant, Sherlock agrees, despite the fact Mycroft was responsible for keeping Sherlock and Irene apart for four years. There are a few surprises in store for everyone in this well-written short novella, and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

This weekend (in March!) I finally snuggled up by a real fire with CHRISTMAS AT THE SAPORIS by KD Sherrinford. This novella was the perfect follow up to SONG FOR SOMEONE, Sherrinford’s first novel in the Sherlock Holmes and Irene Adler Series, however, it was beautiful as a stand alone novella, too.

Sherrinford’s artful storytelling is still a wonder to me as she weaves subtle threads of mystery throughout and then expertly ties them up before you even knew recognize them for the clues they are! I thoroughly enjoyed this mystery as much as her others for both the well-crafted characters that I’ve grown to love, as well as the imaginative plot twists which I’ve come to appreciate from Sherrinford. CHRISTMAS AT THE SAPORIS might be a quick read, but it’s just as rewarding a as ever!

The author has done for the book world what newer Holmes movies have done for the movie world. Fans of Sherlock Holmes who want more now have an additional story using the Holmes characters. This Holiday story brings Sherlock and his brother Mycroft together again for an exciting adventure. The game is afoot.

BOOK REVIEW

Review for 'Christmas At The Saporis' by KD Sherrinford.

Read and reviewed for KD Sherrinford, Zooloos book tours and Extasy Books.

Publication date 27th December 2022.

This is the second book I have read by this author. It is also the second book in the 'Sherlock Holmes And Irene Adler Mysteries' series but can be read as a standalone. I have also read book one in this series which is called 'Song For Someone' which I would highly recommend.

This novella consists of an introduction, 10 chapters and an epilogue. The chapters are short to medium in length so easy to read 'just one more chapter' before bed...OK, I know yeah right, but still just in case!

A HUGE CONGRATULATIONS TO KD SHERRINFORD ON ANOTHER ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS READ.

Yet absolutely successful unputdownable historical mystery by the very talented KD Sherrinford. I'm always a bit dubious with books based historically as I worry about not being able to 'deal' with the language used but I absolutely love how KD has written her book. The language used is perfectly suited to the era whilst being easy to read. The atmosphere and descriptions were perfect. The synopsis and cover also suit the storyline.

An absolutely gorgeous novella that will take you back in time to a Christmas with chestnuts roasting on an open fire!!! This book is the second book in this series but it is a completely separate storyline so can be read completely on it's own. This story takes us back to when Sherlock and Irene Holmes are still living with the identities of Irene Adler and Lucca Sapori. It is only a short book at just 82 pages but those pages are absolutely ram packed with festivity, romance, family drama, secrets, shocks and several surprises for the Sapori family. With tension in the air at Sherlock's brother Mycroft arriving for Christmas dinner and Irene and "Lucca's" children Nicco and Charlotte believing him to be a friend of their fathers but knowing him to be the brother of Nicco's hero Sherlock Holmes will there be a Silent Night at the Sapori household this Christmas? A beautiful novella filled that shows the conflicting interests and emotions between Sherlock and Irene, the drama and secrets in Sherlock's family and so much more. I just couldn't stop turning the pages and as soon as I said just this last chapter and then bed something happened that meant I just had to read another one. I ended up devouring it in one sitting in just under two hours but in that short time KD managed to stir up many emotions with the subjects that she expertly weaved into the storyline. Although they are hard topics to write about ($3xu@| @$$@u|t and r@p3) KD does it in a respectable way and didn't go into too much or unnecessary detail. I was extremely pleased with the ending and personally thought it was perfectly fitting but I won't go into further detail as I don't want to spoil it for others.
As with her first book KD has thoroughly researched her subject, history and Arthur Conan Doyle's works and the fact that she has absolutely shines through the storyline in the settings, events and so much more!! I absolutely adored going back in time and celebrating a historical Christmas and seeing the children do the different activities of the time. A MASSIVE CONGRATULATIONS KD!! It is a pet hate of mine when the author fails to research their chosen topic and it is filled with unnecessary mistakes that could have been easily avoided. KD's fantastic, talented and evocative writing skills draws the reader into the storyline and brings the characters, setting and storyline to life!!! There were so many times I was so absorbed that when I looked up from the book it took me a few moments to realise where I actually was! There were many moments my heart was in my throat wondering what was going to happen next and the ending was absolutely perfect. I don't read an awful lot of historical books but after reading this one I cannot wait to get stuck into more books in what is promising to be an addictive series. I cannot wait to get stuck in to the next book in this series 'Meet Me In Milan' which I'm off to read next so keep your eyes peeled for my review!!!!

Although this is the second book in the series I had would have had absolutely no problems reading it without the others. Any details or events that have previously happened are mentioned in just the right amount of detail to let a new reader know what has happened and yet not too much to bore a previous reader.

The characters were all larger than life and realistic. KD's writing brings each and every one of them to life. My heart went out to Irene on so many occasions I lost count. I love Irene who isn't afraid to say it as it is and but the strong willed Sherlock in his place but who is also a woman who can see Sherlock's side when important. I absolutely loved seeing all the different sides to Sherlock from Detective to husband to father and in this book we also see him as a brother. They both have fantastic chemistry and their interactions were humorous at times and dramatic at others. I absolutely loved the banter between them as well as getting to meet the other characters from Sherlock's family as well as Martha. They all had a part to play and they all played their parts perfectly. There were characters that angered me, others that made me laugh and many that I loved. I won't say any more about the characters as I don't want to give anything away. However, regardless of of you love them or hate them they all worked perfectly to make this such an explosive start to a promising series I cannot wait to meet some of them again and see what they get up to in the next "episode".

If you are looking for an absolutely gorgeous and festive feeling novella that brings history to life then pick up your copy today.

This is exactly why you are in my favourite historical romance author Club KD Sherrinford. A page turning and unputdownable success! A fantastic addition to an addictive series!! Here's to your next success 🥂!!

Overall an action packed novella that is filled with festivities, drama, romance and secrets!!

82 pages.

This book is just £3.31 to purchase on kindle and £5.80 on paperback via Amazon which I think is an absolute bargain for this book!!!

Christmas at the Saporis, by KD Sherrinford.

I was looking forward to reading this book, especially as I have read and enjoyed KD Sherrinford’s novel, Song for Someone.

Christmas at the Saporis continues the story about the famous detective, Sherlock Holmes and the talented singer, Irene Adler. The pair had met and wed in the previous book, and this book expands on their life together.
As expected, I was treated to a beautifully written story, which turned out to be both riveting and surprising in its content. Mycroft, Sherlock’s shunned brother, returns on the scene as Christmas at the Saporis gets underway.

Richly descriptive, I found myself yearning for the Christmas festivities to begin. But when the ghosts of Christmas past crop up and selective secrets are laid bare, it will set you wondering what else is lurking in the cupboard threatening to ruin what should be a joyous occasion… Reunited together at last.

Fantastic, tender, and enthralling to the last page.
Highly recommended.

This is an engaging novella (or long story) more concerned with Irene Adler than Sherlock Holmes. She, Irene, takes on the role of Watson as Holme’s narrator. The story is intriguing and places Holmes in an unusual situation—as husband and father, and the need to keep both a secret. There is a lot of their story up until halfway in the book, at which time we are introduced to the mystery (though there are hints of it at the beginning). I enjoyed the details, and the author has clearly done her research (I particularly enjoyed the references to places in London). I would definitely read more of this take on the Sherlock Holmes mythology.

This Sherlock Holmes story is not your typical Sherlock Holmes story. Author KD Sherrinford has found a wife for Sherlock and this allows him to be more of a complete figure. In this book, the reader learns that Sherlock Holmes and wife have to disguise themselves when in England because there are Underworld people who are keen to kill them.
Yet the focus is on Christmas. And Sherlock Holmes spends it with his family, which includes his brother and sister. Here, we learn a lot about his background that most readers would not have known before.
As always, there is crime close by and Sherlock Holmes gets to solve a murder while becoming even more human as he gives consideration to broader issues in relation to the murder. While the story, set over the Christmas period, is fast paced, it does build the Sherlock Holmes character, allowing the author to show a more rounded Sherlock Holmes in future books. Having enjoyed this book, I look forward to future books from Ms. Sherrinford.

We are taken on a thrilling holiday journey filled with familial tension and long-buried secrets. This story embraces the Christmas spirit while introducing elements of mystery and intrigue.

The story revolves around Irene Adler, the strong-willed wife of the famous detective Sherlock Holmes. Seeking to mend their fractured family, Irene convinces Sherlock to invite his estranged brother Mycroft to their Christmas luncheon. The reader quickly learns that the relationship between Sherlock and Mycroft dissolved due to Mycroft's manipulative actions that caused a four-year separation between Sherlock and Irene.

The narrative beautifully captures the conflicting emotions Sherlock experiences as he agrees to the reunion, torn between his wife's wishes and his own apprehension toward Mycroft. This internal struggle adds depth to Sherlock's character and allows readers to empathize with his predicament.

A core challenge lies in the couple's desire to keep Sherlock's true identity a secret from their children, who only know him as Lucca Sapori. This dynamic creates additional tension and sets the stage for an unexpected revelation that Mycroft may just stumble upon during their gathering.

The plot thickens as ghosts from the past emerge, threatening to shatter the fragile peace the characters have worked so hard to maintain. These unexpected obstacles give the story a much-needed dose of suspense, reminding readers that happiness and harmony are never guaranteed, even during the holidays.

The storytelling is top-notch, with the author demonstrating their prowess in creating vivid scenes and believable characters. Additionally, the mix of a traditional Christmas setting with the unconventional world of Sherlock Holmes makes for a unique and captivating read.

While the novella effectively keeps the reader engaged, there were moments where the pace could have been better managed. Certain sections contained excessive detail, which caused a slight slowdown in the plot. However, this does not detract significantly from the overall enjoyment of the story.

Review

This novella follows Irene Adler and Lucca Sapori at Christmas time. Wanting to have a family Christmas Irene convinces her husband to invite his brother Mycroft to Christmas luncheon. Holmes (Lucca Sapori) had cut ties with her brother once he discovered that he had drove him and Irene apart for nearly four years. Unable to deny his wife’s request no longer they invite Mycroft but of course they cannot reveal what or who he is the their children. But of course things do not always go to plan and soon ghosts of the past are threatening to be revealed and ruin the holidays for everyone.

Again Sherrinford showcases their skill for writing characters and crafting a fitting story with period appropriate setting in a masterful way. At just under  100 pages this novella packs a lot in but never feels rushed. Once again the scene and time period is brought to life vividly and beautifully via Sherrinford’s writing. It was lovely to see the traditional Christmas setting within the world of Sherlock Holmes. I also have to say, much like her ability to expand on the characters of Sherlock and Irene, Mycroft is brought to life wonderfully. We get more of the family dynamic and get to see how Irene, Sherlock and their children work as a family unit but we also have a touch to tension and mystery tied in to keep us hooked.

Again if you are a fan of the literary characters, family dramas and period pieces with an element of Christmas and tension this will be one for you.

Here is the second book in the Sherlock Holmes and Irene Adler Mysteries series and you might have seen my review for book 1 - Song For Someone - the other day.

This book was a super quick read being only 72 pages long.
It can certainly be read as a standalone as this does not lead directly on from book 1, but focusses on a Christmas period when Irene and Lucca celebrate with their family.

After many years of estrangement, Irene invites Mycroft to the family dinner, but things don't go smoothly and when an uninvited guest arrives, memories best forgotten start to surface.

I liked that here, the focus is more on Irene and Sherlock is more in the background. Rather than the genius at work, we see Sherlock in the husband/father role which I found refreshing.

Once again, the writing style perfectly captures the era and the style of the original Sherlock stories.

A lovely quick read - great for this season ...giving me Christmas vibes, which I love!!

Christmas at the Saporis is book two in the Sherlock Holmes & Irene Alder mysteries series.
I absolutely enjoyed this short novella. I devoured it in just a few hours.
The novel continues to follow the Opera singer, Irene Alder, who is now married to the detective, Sherlock Holmes.
The author seems to have done alot of research for her books as the attention to detail is brilliant and the writing is beautiful.
A brilliantly written novel that I highly recommend. I can't wait to read more by the author.
💖 Thank you to the author, KD Sherrinford and @zooloobooktours for my copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

Christmas At The Saporis. By KD Sherringford.

My Review.

What will the Saporis find under the tree this year - Christmas presents, or family skeletons?

This is the second book in the Sherlock Holmes and Irene Adler Mysteries series, but could quite easily be read as a standalone,  made even easier by the brief and handy introduction at the beginning.  This is a novella and can easily be read in one sitting.

Once again KD Sherringford has done an absolutely marvellous job of capturing not only the time period, but the essence of the great Detective. The narrative is driven by Irene Adler and she tells a wonderful story. She manages to persuade Sherlock to invite his brother Mycroft to Christmas lunch, despite the pair being estranged. Of course this is made more awkward because as far as the children are concerned they are the Saporis and Mycroft will have to go along with it.

There is a slight Detective element to this story and a dark shadow from Irene's past to content with, but this is really a story of a family at Christmas and boy does it feel like Christmas when you read this, so much so that I will be re-reading this late December. This is a real slice of Victorian Christmas from roasted Chestnuts, to parlour games, to Christmas day walks, food and good cheer. KD does so well at weaving this all together, part of it being in recognising so many beloved traditions shared by Sherlock and family including the feel of a familial Christmas chaos.  If you even remotely love Christmas time you will love this short but totally engaging read. Easily five stars.

It’s great to visit this wonderful family again—and to experience a Victorian Christmas in March. I loved this book. It’s a unique holiday mystery, and we get to experience it with the family. Set on a beautiful farm at Christmastime, we have drama, a baddie, a birth, hidden identities, and old grudges, all tied up with decoration and rich food. This is a story about trust, redemption, and the delicate balance between past and present. Irene Adler’s attempt at reconciliation sets the stage for a Christmas that is anything but peaceful, as secrets linger and long-standing wounds threaten to open. It’s great to find out more about her and her family. The atmosphere is rich with period detail, making readers feel as though they’ve walked through a Victorian front door.

The interplay between personal drama and mystery is beautifully done. Holmes, the keen observer, navigates an emotional minefield with his estranged brother, and an unexpected ghost haunts their Christmas. The balance of warmth with suspense is perfect. The holiday spirit and tensions collide as Nene tries to hold it together. Fans of Sherlock will love the sharp dialogue, the nods to classic detective storytelling, and the way logic battles for dominance on a farm where the truth can’t stay hidden. Brilliant!

A Delightful New Look at a Beloved Favorite !! . . .

Being a long-time Holmes fan, this was a trifle disorienting for me. But it was well done and I enjoyed it thoroughly. I loved the relationship between Irene and Sherlock (“Lucca Sapori”) and seeing how very different it made his character. And children, Nicco and Charlotte! I never would have thought of that scenario! Will they be able to keep Christmas untouched by bad guys? Or will it be a disappointment for the family?

The attention to detail keeps things comfortable and familiar-ish. Meeting characters in this new environment is full of surprises, yet so familiar. The author has done a fine job with this new look at my favorite series. Just seeing touches of the Holmes who entertained me for years, and seeing a loving, softer side added in, makes this a top choice for me!

What interesting items might be under this Christmas tree?

I won this book in annauthor-reader set of games. My review is unbiased.
I gave this second book in the series 5 stars. I enjoyed the continuation of the characters, with the introduction of others.
Mystery, as we expect from a Sherlock story, enough turns to keep the reader's interest.
It takes place at the Christmas season 1904, Sussex Downs.
Irene Adler persuades her detective husband to invite his brother Mycroft to Christmas luncheon.
But how will they introduce him, while keeping their true identities a secret?
Do they explain why Sherlock had ended contact with his brother?
Festivities look to be going well, until a ghost from the past comes up in unexpected ways, will it ruin Irene's well planned celebration?

My review of Christmas At The Saporis

by KD Sherrinford

Rating ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I thoroughly enjoyed this festive mystery installment in the lives of Sherlock Holmes and Irene Adler.

Irene's request for Sherlock to invite his brother Mycroft to join them for the Christmas day celebrations in the hope of repairing their relationship, didn't go down well as Sherlock had cut ties with him as he drove him and Irene apart for for years, but could not Sherlock refuse his wife anything.

As things seemed to be going quite well between the brothers, some unexpected visitors bringing with them a few surprises and shocks, bringing the celebrated detective to investigate.

Christmas At The Saporis is a truly enthralling read, with amazing descriptive characters and settings.

KD Sherrinford certainly captures the readers attention with her brilliant writing style and gripping storylines.

I read the first book of the trilogy and then I had to hurry and read the second as well. The story is shorter, but much more intriguing and full of surprises. We finally get to meet the two children of Sherlock and Irene, but also many more people the readers won't expect. Everything is also beautifully written and construed, the author has the power to bring you right with the characters as if you were sitting in the same room, listening to them conversing, laughing, arguing and loving each other.
Bravo, and now... I can barely wait to read the last one!

Nene wants to have Christmas in England this year, at the home she owns with her husband, Sherlock Holmes.

With both children, Nicco and Charlotte with them, Nene decides it is time for them to forgive Mycroft, and she invites him to join them for Christmas dinner.

And then, a surprise visitor arrives…

This is a beautifully written novella, which didn’t take me long to read.

I liked the feel of Christmas back in the 1800’s, with the children making their own crackers and decorations, and Martha (Sherlock’s housekeeper) on hand to help with making the dinner.

Great attention to detail, this is a wonderful novella.

I loved this book! It had Victorian Christmas traditions- minced pies, wreaths, carolers, presents and parlor games... and then an engaging murder mystery. Reading this book became a little bit of a tradition for me this past week; l'd turn on the fireplace, sip my coffee and read a bit at a time to see what everyone in this book was up to next. After reading this, I will definitely check out the author's other stories!

This is the first book I’ve read by KD Sherrinford and it was fantastic! I love a good mystery book, especially one that takes place around the holidays! This was a quick, fun read about Sherlock Holmes and his wife, Irene Adler. At first, there seems to be several separate stories going on at once, but by the end it’s clear how they all connect beautifully together and tie up everything nicely. I can’t wait to read more by this wonderful author!

I love that we get to see another chapter of Sherlock and Nene’s life! I wouldn’t have expected anything less than eventful from them! In this short story you get a small glimpse into their family life, and meet their children when they were young. I enjoy the “movie” type of writing as their lives play out, and that this small moment was teased in the first book!

Wonderful

I haven't read book 1 in the Sherlock Holmes and Irene Sadler Mysteries, but that didn't take away from this story. It's a wonderfully written short short story set at Christmas and quite a fascinating take on the other side of Mr Holmes. I'll be sure to pick up the others. Recommended.

Another great book by K. D. Sherrinford. The characters and the scenery are so well described that I was actually picturing myself as an observer in every scene.

Ms. Sherrinford has done extensive research and described everything, including the era, perfectly.

This book is part of a wonderful series, not to be missed. I look forward to reading all of the author’s books.

Very enjoyable Sherlock Holmes mystery. It was entertaining to revisit 221b Baker Street and read about Holmes with a house, wife, daughter and son. His brother, sister and a few others visit the country farmstead at Christmas time and mysteries visit right along with them.
