Holding On and Not Giving Up On Self

Rate this book
'Holding On and Not Giving Up On Self' is a special book written to motivate and inspire our youth towards positive change. This book is spiritually based and reflects upon my personal military experience where mental toughness is exemplified through facing challenges, disappointments, making mistakes, losing hope, taking risk and falling back on my faith in God to see me through. This is a 12 chapter book which has two bonus short stories about family members that have made poor choices as teenagers and have ended up behind bars. Nephew Domonick and cousin Smooth gives you a brief account about their experience along with their new perspective on God, choosing the right friends and staying out of trouble. I have added powerful scriptures throughout the book to help the readers focus on God's goodness. It is my hope that this book will resonate with our youth to instill a sense of purpose, drive, initiative, and ambition towards positive change.

This book was exactly what I needed at this time in my life!

There are many thoughts and perspectives that I want to be able to go back and read when I'm having a bad day or my confidence is waning.

Dee Bryant couples each of these with biblical examples of people who too, have had to face insurmountable odds stacked against them. How using stories of her nephew Domonick and her cousin Smooth, we can see that when choosing to follow what God has in store oftentimes leads to blessings beyond our wildest dreams. More importantly, how we can choose every day to take one simple action that will lead us in a path for a brighter future instead of falling down and staying down. There are simply too many examples to share with you but know that my copy of her book is filled with passages that I have highlighted to help me when I find myself overwhelmed by the circumstances life hands me unexpectedly.

I have loved listening to Dee's messages for years now. Reading her motivational and truly life-changing books because she gives it to you straight and doesn't sugar coat anything. She encourages you to leave your pity party of one and take a different path, to live your dream and make it a reality. To rise above the difficulty of life and embrace the blessings God has in store for you. You just never know, the life that you have always wanted, stands right in front of you, if you are willing to simply take a step in the right direction! I easily give this one a 5 out of 5 stars!

Maybe before reading this book, I should give you first a warning. Bryant’s memoir about her life experiences will guarantee to keep you awake even if you badly wanted to close your eyes.

“Holding on and Not Giving up on Self” is such a riveting read. I just started it this morning and here I am writing my love for it. The narration felt like she was telling my own story because in many ways I could relate to her. Her storytelling also adds up to the amazingness of it. As a child, we both lived with low self-esteem, and we’re very shy, and insecure. Before, I was always praised by our teachers for being smart but just like Dee, I only had very few people I can call my friend.

The scenes she described were all too familiar to me, reminding me of my own very distant past. We share a very painful history between bullies, we both were victims of bullying. I was labeled fat, teased with my size. Even until now, those insecurities have control over me. Seeking to make myself skinny, I skipped my meals and that childhood past is the very reason why I was afraid to gain weight and always felt conscious about my body. I am just happy that Dee didn’t take in those insecurities just like how I did. Thus, she reached out to God, she put her onto him and the power of her faith was the reason why she now believes in herself.

The rawness and the unsentimental way this woman has for telling her story is wrenching. Not sure what else to say except that I liked the way it was written, it’s never a hard story to read. It felt like Bryant was born to write.

The writing is penetrating, insightful, and intelligent. The very best in spiritual writing!

What I liked about this book is its talk about the life of a teenager. I know very few teens my age who have been greatly influenced by their peers. At a very young age, they’ve learned how to have a smoke, drink alcohol, or even do drugs. I know that very well because a cousin of mine stopped going to school because of the same reason. She had to do something she wouldn’t otherwise do because she wanted to feel accepted and valued by her friends. And adult influences are needed in this situation to balance right between being yourself and fitting in with your group. In her case, she becomes lost, she’s adopted and so, she feels like she doesn’t get enough affection from her foster parents but that’s just right in her mind, she doesn’t see her mother’s effort to shape her youth because she was bombarded with hate. And that’s why mental health and parents' guidance at the same time is essential for all juveniles.

Dee’s advice is to make choices based on scriptures. And I truly agree with that. There’s no better teaching than through the Bible. Parenting is hard from day one, but parents have to still take full responsibility for shaping their children and lead them to success in every positive way. Guiding them to what is right is necessary for their growth.

This book would be perfect for children that are lost in their way. Sometimes you have to take multiple wrong turns until you reach the right path. Life can be so hard but as long as you believe in God, you’ll be fine.

Before reading this book, I had a hard time with my family. I also had many discontents in my life. Especially that I had to study hard in order to go to school in the USA to get a master's degree. The whole procedure was not easy for me to move forward with a positive attitude. I'm always nervous about my future and the result of the test. I had no confidence and cried all day with a negative image. I almost think of bad actions. Whenever I face a barrier, I just try to avoid this circumstance. That was my life before I met with Dee Bryant.

Even though some people are saying negative messages about her, for me, she is a gift, gifts from God that makes me happy and gives me new energy to think about my life in a running mode. I hardly focus on my life for a long time. Every moment and every time, I'm afraid about my challenge and I hate many people who don't listen to my opinion. Sometimes, God doesn't exist for me because I couldn't read any message from Him. However, this book stands me up and gives me confidence in how to live and how to love.

I'm happy now. I received a message from God and finally understood his plan. I am not afraid about my future and I don't concerned about my family anymore. God definitely understands and knows my status and has seen my tears and weakness. I try to move forward with His message and every moment I take into consideration of his words deeply. I love my life and God. Without any effort from me, there is no change and no blessing.

I typically do not read memoirs, but reading its premise, I knew I would love it more than any other books I’ve read. And that presumption wasn’t wrong at all.

In “Holding on and Not Giving Up on Self”, Dee bravely traces her harrowing past, while offering an illuminating look at the world of a person who has faith in God. Her life’s story is the evidence that no situation, no other person, and no bad news have the power to bring us down. Not when God is by our side.

This is a meditation on identity, faith, and belongingness to the society we lived in. Lots of characters will resonate with anyone who has struggled to find their place in this cruel world and to understand the significance of our existence. This is a perfect story to stir your faith in God.

Dee approaches her spiritual faith with the curiosity and dedication to live the life she was meant to live. Grounding her faith in God, she is now far from what she is before. She worked for the United States Government as an army and she had dedicated her life and put it on the line to serve the people. Despite her enormous responsibility to her country, she was still able to build a strong relationship with God. She also comes as a seeker, one just discovering why spiritual journeys are always worthwhile.

I enjoyed reading Dee’s journey, given how compelling and inspiring her writing is, that just begs for a follow-up book!

It's hard to find words to fully explain this book.

In Dee’s sixth grade, she was very shy and insecure, she had very poor self-esteem which resorted to her being the bullies’ apple of the eye. There are very few people she can call her friend, and through her childhood years, she has lived in her sister’s shadow. In high school, she had her first job, and to keep it, she was forced to speak and smile in front of the customers, which is a challenge to her because she’s not used to it. And her work as a front register, drive-thru, and a cook at times, helped her reduce her shyness a bit. But whenever she’s taking an order, people would comment about her voice sounding like a white girl, and that felt like an insult to her. That’s when she lost what she had struggled to build again. From thereon, she didn’t want to talk ever again unless it’s necessary.

We have different levels of sensitivity and even the little things could hurt a person. Things might hurt for one but not for you or the other way around. So it is a must for us to be careful about how we treat other people. We might not be aware, but they’re hurting inside because of our actions.

This book. Her story. Her ability to overcome. All incredible feats of the human spirit. This is important because it opens our eyes to the reality of what others may be going through. You will never know someone else’s story until you experience it yourself. And in this book, Dee will bring you along her journey.

Simply outstanding.

One of the most inspiring books I've had the pleasure of reading in 2020 is Holding On And Not Giving Up On Self. In our society when we feel we have failed, we seem to dwell on our disappointments and seem tethered to past sins. But in this book, Dee Bryant made me realize that we shouldn't hold on to the troubles of the past. Instead of looking inward, we should be looking outwards and upwards to the Lord who gives us hope and a future. Like a potter, He molds us, flaws and all, and by his mercy and grace gives us lots of second chances to be a useful and beautiful vessel. In this powerful book, we are instructed not to listen to the whispers of a devil who wants us to lose faith and hope, but to be encouraged and strengthened by the words and promises of the God who created us.

The book is biblically based and its lessons reinforced with modern-day examples, as well as sharing the stories of two teens who cross a wrong path but become shining examples of courage and faith, turning their weaknesses into strength and bringing about God's perfect plan for their lives. Although short in length, this is a book that helped me to take an honest look at my flaws and self-doubts. In reflection, I can look at myself in a new light and be filled with hope and encouragement. I now see myself as a work of art in progress. I loved this wonderfully motivating book. Highly recommend it!

Every story matters and this is one you won't want to miss.

“By stepping outside of your comfort zone, perhaps the discomfort of uncertainty can create the condition for optimal performance as you strive to become the best you can be.”
The hardest thing to do is leaving your comfort zone, taking a risk that you’re not sure will do anything good to you. But stepping out of your comfort zone and trying new things is the best way to grow. By stepping out of your box, you don’t have to settle for what you are right now, you get to create who you want to become, the best version of yourself. And there’s nothing more satisfying than fulfilling your dreams.

Dee becoming a soldier, living and working in a foreign country while being nearly attacked and surviving despite all odds, reminds her that God will always be by her side no matter what. God never sends us in a situation alone, he’s walking with us. We should fear nothing for he will always be present but before anything else, we should honor and put God first in everything that we do and watch your life change beyond your wildest dreams.
Dee, you are a warrior, a fighter. And I feel so privileged at the opportunity to read your story.

A must-read! This well-written book is full of godly wisdom extracted from the bible and useful for group discussions and book clubs, as well as bible studies. I learned about this book from my Christian workmate and I am very thankful I got to read this.

Dee brings her personal experience as part of the Army and a wife, quotes and stories to help us to find the strength, courage, and motivation needed as we pursue our dreams. The book is an easy read which can be picked up and read even when short on time. Each chapter stands alone bringing an inspiring thought to help when on the brink of giving up or quitting.

She helps us to look at the attitude within us, the opposition around us, and to God, the answer to our questions as we journey. No matter our quest, we all need that push at times to keep going and press on towards the prize.

Reading her words is like having a personal coach alongside you, speaking words of affirmation and encouragement.

She encourages us to take time every day to recognize the greatness of our God and His personal involvement in the everyday lives of His people. The book is an inspiring and upbeat read, almost a necessity in a world often filled with negativity especially to teenagers.

This book was beyond inspiring. The author truly made me believe that my dreams are worth not giving up for. This book is composed of twelve chapters focusing on the main theme of why you shouldn't give up when you are so close to achieving your goals. Though this is a very motivational book, I would like to say that the author mentions God quite often. Sometimes when you are in a situation where you want to give up, you feel alone and helpless. This book kind of felt like a one-on-one conversation. It was as if the author was actually reaching out to me and was right in front of me making sure I didn't fall behind. I got this book at the right time when I was stressed about school and other things.

Dee Bryant tells you that you are unique in your own ways and there will be a time where you get to shine...but only if you put in that hard work. You have to put in your best effort to get to your goal. I really like how each chapter was different from one another. With every passing "chapter", I felt myself getting stronger and a little more confident. I think this book actually changed me a bit. After reading this in detail, I am almost positive that I can overcome my obstacles in life and reach my goal in no time at all.
A must-read.

Dee Bryant really writes from the heart!

Although it may sound silly, I found this book quite responsive in terms of guidance and encouragement. As this has been an extremely hectic semester, I was unable to read this as hungrily as I would have intended. However, on those rare quiet evenings when I had somehow managed to finish my homework early, I would pick up this book and read a little before bed. What a wonderful book to wind down with, to inspire you, and to refresh your spirit. Sure enough, whatever I was struggling with at that moment, that would be the exact content of the chapter for that evening. I felt that it was written just for me.

I understand that not everyone is religious, and my last intention is to preach to others, however, I do firmly believe in the importance of believing in something bigger than yourself. This book offers a new perspective as well as scripture to assure you that this is not something you are meant to be caught up in; there is more beyond your fear or anxiety. I hope to maintain this in my everyday life, as well as maybe write something so inspiring in the future.
What's more, this book inspired me to be the wise walker who can bring joy, friendliness, and enthusiasm to people's lives!

Holding On And Not Giving Up On Self was a refreshing, interesting, and inspirational piece. I honestly really enjoyed reading this book. Oftentimes, it is hard to find a good book with a positive message in it. I loved that this book inspired us, no matter what we are going through in life. It challenges us to take a look at our situation and know that we can overcome our struggles. The author provides a real-life story at the beginning of each chapter, which makes the book even more powerful and inspirational.

Dee Bryant challenges you to become a better person by reaching your goals. She doesn't set those goals for you like so many other self-help guides do, he actually teaches you how to take on whatever is in your way, beat it, and achieve the life that you deserve. Without going into too much detail so as not to ruin the reading experience for anyone, I will tell you that this book will change the way you think about what you have, what you want, and how to go about making the best of what you have and getting what you want. I realize that may sound cryptic, but everyone's story is different and that is why this book works better than any other book of this type out there, it adapts itself to your own personal story.

Great book! It's always good to accept encouragement based on God's word. I borrowed this, but I want a copy of my own. I can definitely see myself reading this one a few more times, as I'm always on my way somewhere.

Dee Bryant has written an easy to read the book to encourage a person to enjoy each day and the life you have in the present. She uses Biblical scriptures to help the reader understand that we are to have attainable goals, but enjoy the progress as we journey along the way. As I read this book, I felt hopeful about the future. Even though I know I can not control many events that will happen, I can make the decision to have a measure of peace and even joy in the midst of my journey. It may not always be easy and the author does not assure you will not experience problems, but that in the midst of everyday life, you are responsible to decide to find your joy. I am looking forward to finding those hidden blessings each day because I know they are there! A very good book for faith-based teaching about learning to find joy in small things each day. This is a great gift idea for your friends!

After reading what her childhood was like, I am simply amazed that Dee survived to live her life and write this book.

This is such a fantastic book to read. Anyone who knows what my reading style is knows that I’m not a huge fan of memoir. Honestly, I think that most people who read this genre are those who are now of age, the readers who are much older than me. When I read a book I liked to have a companion to talk the details out and so if they are older than I am, it would be hard for me to look for someone with whom I can discuss it, hence, I often avoid these types of literature. But reading this masterpiece steers clear all the stereotypes I believed. As soon as I read Bryant’s “Holding on and Not Giving up on Self”, I was instantly intrigued. I guarantee that this is not your run-of-the-mill memoir.

This one will knock you off your feet. Dee is much older than me and she pretty much experienced more in her early years than I am. And I loved how I was able to see what life could be on people I barely even know with. A delightful read is worthy of every single person’s praise.

This was a very well done and honest account by the author.

We follow the memoir story of Dee Bryant. After that entire experience as a child, she had an opportunity to leave her home and gain her freedom to do what she wants. Being swayed for a little time in continuing her education and going to college, she still raised her hand and solemnly oath to serve and defend the Constitution of the United States and its people.

There’s a question that Dee asked her readers and it goes like, “What do you want to do after graduating high school and why?” I was frozen in my seat after that. To be honest, I’ve always wanted to go to college and be a Doctor, but at times, I doubted myself if it was really the right path for me. And Dee’s advice really got onto me, if you wanted to become the best version of yourself, act like the person you wanted to become, and with time, hard work, and faith, you will be so much more. If you badly want to do a thing, do it, as long as it’s in the ethical standards, it will never be that hard to try.

Each word was etched out carefully. This isn’t just about a woman, it is about a woman who never gave up.

Wow. Diving deep into this book, I don’t even know what to expect but what I don’t know now is how to describe what this book made me feel during my entire journey with Dee. I sure had no idea what I was getting myself into!

This is a book that illustrates the human condition. It encompasses our strengths, our weaknesses, our compassion, our failures, and our hopes, and our courage. As the story progresses, one thing leads to another. From her painful past, Dee emerged as a determined and passionate woman bringing an important message to tell.

I liked how this book teaches us not to give up. It does not matter how slowly we go, as long as we do not stop, there’s nothing to regret. Through decades of existing in this world, I have perceived that those people who have accomplished the most important thing here on earth are the ones who kept trying when there seemed to be no hope at all. And if you’re on the edge right now, this one’s made for you.

All that she needed to convey was told in an incredibly captivating way. I must say, she tells her story very well. I really commend her for being so transparent. It all feels authentic and real.

“Holding On and Not Giving up On Self” is a fast and fascinating read. One that will leave you forever changed and eternally grateful for the human spirit and its ability to rise above the darkness.

The book was demonstrated through Dee telling us of her very personal story of her life as a teenager until she became a retired US Army. Torn between leaving and staying in the military, her departure has not been easy for her. But she takes the risk of retiring and starting a new, life-changing decision opened lots of opportunities to her.

If your plans don’t go quite well, always remember that God has a purpose for your life. You may feel lost and alone but God knows exactly where you are, trust him and don’t give up, I’m sure you’ll end up in your right place if you stay grounded in your faith just like Dee.

Dee, your passion for God’s glory put you where you are today. I’m thankful that you have shared so much of your life so openly, allowing us to see the light and your fighting spirit you’ve made through your childhood up until the present. I have learned so much in this journey, and I hope the message of yours will be instilled in the mind of the youth.

As a young woman, Dee led a life of confusion, she was a loner and doesn’t even have a concrete plan for her future. But things happened and she became part of the military army.

In her sixth grade, she was bullied by her mean classmates. She had managed to work part-time jobs during her high school years, making money become her priority and her education only comes after that. Four months after graduating, she decided to move to Atlanta and continue her college there. But she encountered the worst, she attended to all their needs there and eventually became a maid to her three younger cousins. Unable to survive while being treated poorly, she once again came back to Jacksonville without having any plan to do.

One day, she ran into her professor, they had a little talk and was disappointed that she wasn’t going to College. Striving to live up to one’s imagination is an admirable thing of course, but becoming who exactly we wanted to be is much more fulfilling.

The attention to detail throughout the book is remarkable. Trust me and read it. I’m confident that once you read it, you will not only like this book but be enthralled by it.

This book tackles a story of grace and law like two sides of one coin. This is a book that tells us Dee’s story, but most importantly the story of how God becomes part of her life.

Dee is part of the US military, and one time in their co-ed barracks, she was nearly attacked by her co-soldier. This particular night, she was awakened by an intruder. He might not be able to harass her sexually but it caused trauma to Dee. We always believe that soldiers are strong and brave, but in Dee’s case, she proves that even those who we believe are the strongest can also be harassed in unexpected times. It’s never a woman’s fault. Neither a woman’s body nor her clothes are invitations to any form of sexual violence.

Furthermore, many female soldiers like Dee were scrutinized by her fellow male soldiers based on stereotypes about their job performance. As we strived to build a community free from all forms of gender-bias, especially against all women and girls, it is also important for the people to do their part and refrain from blaming the victim.

No one is to end this book without having some serious and confronting self-reflection.

This is a wonderful book for those who need some encouragement!

There are a lot of great scriptures aptly expounded and applied in this book. The author shares plenty of practical ideas on how to recover and maintain the joie de vivre that keeps us going. This is not a self-help book, per se. On the contrary, Bryant is pointing us to God, rather than ourselves. The idea is that, when we get His perspective on ourselves, our pain, and our circumstances, joy finds its way into our hearts.

I recommend this book to all sorts of Christians. I enjoyed reading it as a daily devotional, and shared highlights with my friends on Facebook to encourage them and help me remember. Moreover, it has discussion questions at the end, a good facilitator would find Holding On And Not Giving Up On Self a useful text for a small group Bible study or book-of-the-month club. At the end of every chapter, the author includes some powerful scriptures, if you are into that sort of thing. If hope is lacking in your life, or you'd like a bit more, this is a great place to start. Buy one for your personal library, and another to give away.

This book offers some incredible perspective and insight into how God works through the challenges we experience in life to transform us into who He knows we can become. Dee Bryant shares many of her own challenging stories in an open and honest way that helped me feel like she could actually relate to some of the difficulties in life that I have experienced. If you are ready for a fresh perspective on the hard times in your own life, I would highly recommend this book!

Favorite Quote:

"Your determination is focused energy that helps to motivate your efforts towards getting things done. The more determined you are the better your chances are of accomplishing your goals. Through the power of executing tasks, you learn to understand your strengths and weaknesses. Focus on your strengths as you strive for excellence. Sometimes disappointment is a minor setback so God can set you up for higher blessings. You must stay on course in spite of disappointment. Put God first in everything you do and you will succeed."

This is one of those books you want to read twice because there is so much to take in.

"It felt as if my hopes and confidence were wiped away in an instant. I started to think perhaps I just wasn't good enough."

If you ever need to be inspired by life, this is worth reading. Especially in today's world where there doesn't seem to be much hope sometimes in dealing with your problems, especially when you are young.

I opened this book at a time in my life where I saw I had very much lost much confidence in faith and let fear take over my life. I picked up many books on the subject of "confidence" but this one sung to me. As soon as I opened it up and started reading it, I couldn't put it down. Dee Bryant hits faith hard in this book, while also educating about teen's issues and place in the bible and the world as we know it. She doesn't miss a beat in covering many ways to get your confidence in God back as you are building a bridge in yourself. This book helped tremendously and I will never forget it.

This book is beyond words! If you need a boost of motivation get this. Read it, and reread it.

I picked up this book at the library because the title reached out to me. I have felt stuck in a rut for a while, not sure of what was going on with me. I had no energy or desire to do the things I like to do, so I figured I give this book a try. It gave me lots of answers to questions I had. I believe I am just in a holding pattern and that if I listen and talk to God more, he will have a plan B for me, because B is better than A.

"The Lord loves you and he favors you. It is important that you understand you are special, unique, and one-of-a-kind. There is no one just like you. You are God’s masterpiece."

Dee Bryant puts things so simply. It speaks the truth and applies scripture and stories in a way that strikes a chord with everyone. This book really hit home and was very uplifting and encouraging!

Move forward and don’t look back! God is the author of your story. Give Him all your burdens and fears and live in peace—wait patiently for His plan to be revealed, His plan is always better than yours!

Dee Bryant has dedicated her life to the United States, she has worked in the US Government and to the citizens. But if you knew her years later than that, you wouldn’t believe that she would end up in that profession. She’s very shy as a child, she pretty much lived in the shadows of her sister and was often called “Rosalyn’s sister”, and she’s living her whole life as a loner, not until things happen.

Her only silver lining amidst all the stacked up odds that seem to always go against her is her self’s strong spirit and faith in God. At times, Dee’s story was almost unbearable. If you have a stomach for such stories, I guess this one's for you. We follow her story as she tells us how she had lived through years of her existence. It’s as if she brings her readers along her journey.

I had hoped I’ve read this beauty much earlier, and I’m so glad I was able to now. This story is a testament to the human spirit that anyone who was able to survive those obstacles right from the start and come out with new personal strength and a positive view of their life was guided by our God.

As someone who lives in the far opposite country of Dee, her descriptions of growing up and living in the United States are interesting. Much more interesting are her spiritual/religious judgments and her inspiring story.

The scene that I really like in this book was Dee getting her airborne qualification. I really admire how brave she was despite the possibilities of physical and mental stresses, as well as serious injury. Even though she was scared, she put on her game face and managed to activate her ‘I can and I will’ attitude. The narrative was written in a way that invites its readers on an actual journey, so when she jumped and shouted the words “I did it”, I felt so proud of her.

“I truly believe God has instilled in all of us an unbelievable drive to do just about anything.”

Don’t be afraid of anything outside your comfort zone, take the risk and believe in what you can do because that is the only way for you to achieve the best version of yourself.

The writing was undeniably magnificent. A must-read to all ages.

I am 17 years old and I have staggering low self-esteem issues that color basically everything I do. I figured I'd try to read some books that might help. This struck a chord in me somewhere deep down and offered me things I didn't realize I needed. I should read more books like this.

The content and general style of the book encourage its readers to look inward, to look back, assess and affirm the pain, the messiness, the failures, the what might have been, in ways that acknowledges what has happened--because you know you can't change what you don't acknowledge!

Overall, Holding On And Not Giving Up On Self is a great, and quick read of encouraging words. Life is not what we expect. We expect perfection and a walk in the park, but when things don’t go as planned (because we are not in control) then we tend to prison ourselves with failure and condemning thoughts. Dee Bryant will help you think differently and when you think differently, inner thoughts contribute to outward behavior. Great read!

Uplifting, positive, faith-filled, and a fun read. A great reminder to let go of the past and live God’s dream for my life.

If the purpose of this book was to motivate and encourage using some biblical aspects and everyday life, then Dee Bryant has accomplished her mission. If the goal of this book was to give the reader a book that flowed like an ongoing conversation, then once again the goal was met. If the goal of this book was to not bog down the reader with a lot of religious dogma and theology, then again the goal was met.

I thought this was an excellent book. I finished it feeling motivated and encouraged. It did challenge my thinking on how I pray and how we should pray and it left me with the mindset that I can pray bigger prayers and sometimes they can be about me. I do suggest that people take the time to research the Bible scriptures mentioned and that they pray for FULL understanding. Also, when praying, we must keep a balance. Just like we should spend time just thanking God, we also should spend time praying for others and ourselves.

Dee writes in a mesmerizing style that keeps the readers’ eyes glued to the page and their souls bonded to the message. Perhaps the fact that it covers so many heavy real-life issues has some part in the magic, but the author’s writing style is surely the main star. I actually found myself so engrossed in her life story and the point she was making, and before I knew it, my days had become so filled with positive light once I finished reading the book.

It’s a short book in comparison to the ones that I used to read, and you’ll be sad to see it come to a conclusion. One of the things that totally fascinated me was her enlistment in the Army. She was recruited and took the ASVAB exam twice to pass. She then flew from Florida to Alabama. Her life in the crucible then began.

Holding On is the type of book that brings a myriad of emotional experiences to its readers. It is definitely something that you would want to take your time reading to savor all the profound mental images and spiritual messages it brings. Great read!

If you are looking for a book that will take you on a great adventure of doubt and faith, and then faith all the way, then Holding On and Not Giving Up on Self is the book for you.

This book is themed on how God can work in many ways to save you if you let HIm. Many times I was faced with challenges in life. Even at a very young age, she was bullied. However, Dee is a different child who didn’t like bullies. However, her future does not include admission to College. She tried working as a front register which required speaking, and being nice to people even if you don’t feel like it until she ran into her former professor who introduced The United States Army to her. Enlisting in the army wasn’t really Dee’s plan but with the huge twist in her life which molded her core values and unique outlook, Des is now a successful person and is living a life filled with God’s blessings.

I truly recommend this book. This is the book that everyone should read for their personal devotion to God.

With the interesting and challenging life story of the author herself, this was a very well-written book. There were times when I thought the circumstances of Dee become unbelievably difficult, but that’s probably more of a reflection on me than on the writer’s ability to write. Holding On is a beautiful book that makes you feel as if you’ve just received new light, as well as the pleasure of reading the story from which it was derived.

Mental Toughness is one of the highlights of the book. I had a blast reading it. But what is mental toughness? “Mental Toughness is all about having emotional resilience, a sense of personal excellence, turning pressure into opportunity, working through difficult challenges, and forcing one’s mind to focus only on those things that they can control” (Bryant, 2016). These are just a few of the things that the readers would be able to learn and discover. I’m not going to spoil more, I’ll let the reader read for themselves and will appreciate the content of the book.
