After staying in a B&B in New Richmond, Ohio, and learning about local history, I picked up this book by a woman who had grown up nearby and wrote this memoir when she was old. Her parents were Russian Jewish immigrants who made it to a little farm via Boston, then Cincinnati, in the early 20th century, motivated to leave Cincinnati by a "back to the land" movement. A good picture of small town/country life of that era. Life on the farm was typically hard, and eventually Meckler's papa moved them out west in hopes of better things. Meckler always rather resented her father, apparently for his lack of success and less than cheery temper. She became a writer.
