Somewhat Strange “Learn to Draw” Book

I found this book's blurb a little insulting. Why must either children or adults be impatient if they want to learn how to draw simple objects, people, and creatures in a short amount of time? Simple objects shouldn’t take long to draw!

But I digress. Considering that this book has over a thousand things to draw, it is surprisingly short, weighing in at just 163 pages. How do they do it? They cram seven items to draw on a single page, each with five steps (except for the test shapes at the very start of the book). The first four the publisher considers somewhat rudimentary, with the basic shapes and details of the object, person, or creature, and the fifth step adds more detail, usually shading. For some drawings, this rigid use of four and five steps requires that the would-be artist has to do a lot in the 4th or 5th step. Because so many images with so many steps are crammed onto a page, it was sometimes hard to note precisely what needed to be added in each step--even though the publisher tried to make new additions bolder. Some images clearly needed more steps, like the astronaut.

Apparently, this book was first published in Germany. Unfortunately, the author didn't vet all the names of the images with a native English speaker, because there were some words I didn't know or recognize, even though I knew what the object, person, or creature was. For instance, I've never heard of a “duffle coat” or seen a piglet called a “peccary.” Some errors made me laugh out loud. For instance, one that looked like a standard short dresser was called a commode! By the way, this book uses some British terms for items, not American ones. So “sweaters” are called “jumpers” and a flashlight is a “torch.” The author appeared to handwrite the name of the item, person, or creature, which is sometimes almost illegible in my digital copy. For instance, I only knew that one drawing was a bison because I recognized the shape of the animal and saw a B at the start of the word!

Finally, this book contains images of people, items, and creatures that very few people would want to draw. The book starts with images from items in the kitchen, moves on to handyman stuff, and so on. Only a few sections are interesting, like drawings of Greek gods and goddesses and fantasy creatures; most images are rather mundane. There was one section just for me, though--stick figures doing various activities!

With all these issues, I'm not sure if I feel like I can recommend this drawing book. Perhaps if you just want to practice drawing some simple objects or creatures, this might be useful, or if you're interested in making your own comic book or manga using typical household objects and daily life things.

I received a free digital copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.

I enjoyed this book. I draw everyday, but as a perfectionist, I draw slowly and have to get everything perfect as I go along. So I was drawn to the idea of a book that will help me practice quick sketches. And while I focus on character art and don't really need help there, I'd like more practice on items, landscapes, animals, etc. and knew this book would have a lot of variety.

Each page has seven different drawings on it with four steps each instructing on how to complete the drawing. I love how this book uses gray and black colors to guide you through the steps and make it easy to see what the next step is and what was already completed.

The chapters include:

Inanimate Objects- kitchenware, appliances, tools, toys, instruments, electronics, etc.

People- figures, faces, occupations

Mythical Figures- fairy, genie, Santa, unicorn, centaur, ghost

Animals and Insects

Plants and Nature- flowers, trees, vegetables, fruit, foods

Outdoor- streetlamp, traffic light, playground equipment

Vehicles- bicycle, car, trucks, trains, ships

Buildings and Sites- castle, church, building, temple, pyramid

Other- emoji faces, planets, miscellaneous

A nice book to practice and work on different things. 4 stars
