Your Mommy Was Just Like You

Once upon a time-according to Grandma-Mommy loved getting messy, wearing kooky costumes, and dragging out bedtime with just one more story. She collected bottle caps and dandelion fluff, and didn't know how to tie her shoes. Sometimes she was a terror, but most of the time she was a sweet potato. Just like her own little girl today.

Kids love to hear about what their parents were like as children, and this celebration of moms and the little girls they were will inspire lots of laughter and memories.

In case you're wondering, I use the 'It's the City' Book Review "Rating System" here's the link: http://citybookreview.com/our-rating-...

1 Star – Probably only going to be read and enjoyed by the author’s mother.
2 Stars – This book was a waste of time for the general reader
3 Stars – While not a bad book, probably wouldn’t read it again/recommend it to a friend.
4 Stars – Enjoyed it, will recommend it to friends.
5 Stars – An excellent example of the genre. Will be giving it out as gifts.

...Bottom line: A three isn’t a recommendation. It’s a “You’ll like this sort of thing if you like this sort of thing” kind of review.

This book would be a good inter-generational read, as the grandmother in the story describes how the main character’s mother was just like the main character in her youth.

Great way to show students about family history as it includes a daughter and a mother and then a granddaughter/daughter. I also like this book because it shows students the I-thou relationship Friere speaks of, instead of having students look at adults as power sources.

This is a book I can imagine reading to my granddaughter some day, because this book is so like my daughter. 🥰 The artwork was okay.

Your Mommy Was Just Like You by Kelly Bennett
I wanted this book particularly for our youngest grandson. When I started reading it many memories were brought to life as yes my
daughter did have her favorite stuffed animal and yes she knows all their names and the kitty cat had to go with her wherever she went.
Her son has the kitty cat now among hundreds of other animals that he assures me he knows what each and every name is!
Especially like the part where the child is in school and does not know all the letter nor all the numbers but practice helped.
After reading this one I knew I had to go and buy the Daddy book which I have done.

I won the book contest at Jean's site: http://www.jeanbooknerd.com/2013/05/y...
and Kelly Bennett sent me the prize(S) Her FB page is here: https://www.facebook.com/kellybennett...
Got bookmarkers, postcards, signed book and pamphlet of her books and school visits, etc and a poster with Mommy and Daddy books.
Thanks so much!

I enjoyed reading this to my 5 year old grandchild. Author Kelly Bennett wrote words much like I would say to my grandchilren to help them see that they are an important part in a family, with characteristic similar to their parents. David Waler's illustrations are delightful.

The illustrations are sweet, and I appreciated that sometimes the mommy was good and sometimes she wasn't (brought to mind the old Eloise Wilkin "Good Little Bad Little Girl" which I adored to pieces as a child) and also appreciated that sometimes the girl dressed as a princess and sometimes as a robot. But I guess I wanted more clues that the images of the mommy as a little girl were set the past, though since they are more contemporary/generic, way they can be relevant to more generations. Also, the details seemed both too specific and not specific enough; this is kind of an impossible story to tell for everybody, isn't it? I hope that this prompts a lot of storytelling in families as they read it together.

K picked this book up from our public library.

I really liked how the author did a great job with showing kids that their parents which in this case is a mother use to act just like them. The pictures went great with what the author was telling us. The only problem I had was that I didn't know that it was told from a grandparent's point of view. Well the grandmother. It kind of confused K a bit. Though this book is a good way to bring together the memories of a grandmother to her daughter and from her to her daughter.

narrative as if grandma was telling of mommy, so whatever your little 2 year old calls her maternal grandma, it was more understandable to flip it around as if mommy was narrating it and addressing. if grandma reads it, it would be spot on great with a little extra ad libbing to emphasize who the person in the pictures are. the pictures are there, so make the most of it, as if were your own pics.

Grandma tells baby all the many ways her mother was like her, the way she looked and the way she acted.

“Your mommy was bouncy and
twirly-whirly.
Just like you.
She loved to play games,
but she didn’t always win.
Sometimes she got hurt.
I’d bandage her scrapes and
give her extra lovies.
After, she always
wanted to play again.”
