Dr. Phineas Parkhurst Quimby (1802-1866) was a lifelong resident of Belfast, ME and a clockmaker, by trade. From the late 1840s until the time of his transition, he wrote down his own particular philosophical, psychological and metaphysical views on life, death, health, religion and the mind. His early studies of hypnosis, then called mesmerism, led him later on to develop his unique method of healing for both mental and physical affirmities. Proud of his New England heritage, passionate in his love of liberty and equality for all, outspoken in his admonitions against what he considered aristocracy and priestcraft, empathetic toward the sick and suffering, he recorded his experiences, experiments and case studies of his own life journey's explorations into humanity and spirituality, in order to leave behind, for us, what he found, for himself, to be universally applicable truths, for the benefit of all mankind. For this reason, he wrote this book. ~ Rev. Lux Newman, Church of Spiritual Science
Phineas Parkhurst Quimby was an American spiritual teacher. Quimby was a philosopher, magnetizer, mesmerist, healer, and inventor, who resided in Belfast, Maine, and had an office in Portland, Maine. Quimby's work is widely recognized as leading to the New Thought movement. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phineas...
For nearly two decades, Dr. Phineas Parkhurst Quimby, who spent much of his adult life as a clockmaker in New England, began to write his philosophical views on healing, religion, and the nature of the mind. He was a student of mesmerism (an early form of hypnosis) and developed a particularly unique means of augmenting the healing process (both physically and mentally).
I found it particularly resonant with my experience to read that many of his clients suffered from guilt, depression and other forms of dis-ease, which arose as a direct result of their religious beliefs. He soon discovered that it was the pathological belief in an arrogant, punitive, harsh and murderous "god" that was manifesting as dis-ease in so many of those who sought his help.
By helping them to recognise that what has been labeled as "God" is a metaphor for Truth, Love, Wisdom and Healing. And he helped them discover that the direct experience of this "God" is the experience of unconditional love, forgiveness and inspiration.
Much like the Tibetan practice of Lojong, Dr. Quimby's writings offer suggestions for learning to pay attention to the thoughts we think and to the reaction that arises from them. This book serves as a wonderful foundational study for those considering to learn Spiritual Mind Treatment, and who possess a sincere desire to help alleviate the suffering in the world today.
