Once Upon A Kingdom: Parable Of Morals, Values and Kindness
This is a collection of stories that will capture the hearts and imaginations of children, leading them to an understanding of right from wrong. These parables are from a time gone by and contain important learning lessons about morals, values, and kindness by which to live. All of these tales were shared with the children in the congregation of author Rabbi Daniel Roberts throughout his 35-year career at Temple Emanu El in Cleveland, Ohio. Every story contains a life lesson intended to evoke discussion. Throughout the stories the reader follows a small community and royal family as they are challenged with life lessons and counseled by their Rabbi. Through humor and storytelling this collection is a wonderful reminder that "once upon a time" happens all the time.

Once Upon a Kingdom is a book by Rabbi Daniel Roberts with illustrations by Peter Trimarco. The author presents stories about a royal family for children highlighting morals, values, and kindness as he shares lessons about friendship, consistency in character, acting conscientiously, graciousness, and bravery. The tales introduce new vocabulary and are designed to start a conversation as possible discussion questions and points of interest are marked at the end of each story. The hero of the story is usually the rabbi, and he often becomes the “teacher” in each narrative as he reveals the moral behind it.
Rabbi Daniel Roberts has crafted beautiful, appropriate children’s stories that reveal a life lesson with each turn of the page! Each thought-provoking tale encourages the readers and the listener(s) to reflect on the message and participate in a discussion about the characters. The royal family consists of a king, queen, prince, and princess, so the reader and listener(s) can understand the impact of the lesson from several points of view. Children will comprehend that the lessons apply to the children and the parents, so they may realize that parents can make mistakes, too. Religious scriptures are discussed, but Rabbi Roberts encourages storytellers to put the names of their religious figures or another wise person in place of the rabbi, if needed. The book is adorned with beautiful illustrations by Peter Trimarco and lists suggestions for activities during the story to enhance the experience for larger audiences. Once Upon a Kingdom is a good selection for caregivers to consider, especially if they wish children to expand their imagination and learn the difference between right and wrong.
