This might as accurately have been titled, “The Second Greatest Fishing Stories Ever Told.” The intos to many of them concede that better, more popular works by the author are compiled elsewhere. He missed the mark completely with Hemingway, and there is precious little by way of the humor writing fishing has produced. It skews pretty heavily toward fly fishing. All that said, some of these are spellbinding. I won’t read it again, but it was worth one trip through it.

Wonderful collection of fishing stories that run the gamut; from panfish and lowly trouts to 1000 pound blue marlin. Lyons Press has the fishing literature game covered. I highly recommend.

This was overall a pretty good book. Out of all the stories compiled within it I found, "Fishing the Run," to be my favorite. I thought that the majority of the stories were very interesting while a small group of them could have been left out. (This could just be because of my different fishing tastes). It was well written though. I plan on picking it up when I have nothing to do and re-read some of the stories in it. Overall, I would say this book was pretty good and a great counterpart to Lamar Underwood's Hunting book titled "The Greatest Hunting Stories Ever Told."

Picking out stories for an art event, I found many of these to be great. Many of them are so-so. Fishing, like baseball and golf (presumably), lends itself to literature because of all of the contemplation and solitude. It was somewhat like reading Patrick O'Brien or Tom Clancy (presumably) in that the ever-present technical details (fishing, sailing, flying a fighter jet) don't distract from the humanity inherent in the tales.
