A start-to-finish publicity guide written by a working journalist instead of a PR person. Jeff Crilley, an Emmy Award winning reporter, shares secrets from inside a newsroom that even some PR pros don't know.
I picked up this book at an event where Mr. Crilley was speaking, because he said it was useful to anyone in sales - including writers and general marketing people. No, it isn't. It is a good short reference on how you can use reporters and news to market your business, but it is mostly aimed at nonprofits, businesses and subject matter experts.
This book for me was just a prologue to publicity. It lacked the analysis and examples that I was hoping to learn for publicity schemes; although, on the face of it, I already expected that it wouldn't somewhat dive into deeper things. What a fun-bite-piece of book.
This is a quick read, and a hybrid of knowledge and entertainment. Jeff is very engaging, and while I was fortunate to meet him in person, I am confident any reader can get a good sense of his personality from his writing. He has a lot packed into this book. Why should a TV reporter write a PR book? He knows the inside scoop - and to follow it up, he is now running his own PR firm (Real News Public Relations), which he staffed with former media veterans also. This is a smart buy; it is classic enough to reference as refresher, but so well written you may opt to share it as inspiration to others.
I read this book back in 2006. I met the speaker again yesterday and got to talk to him a bit. I bought another copy, and I read a good chunk of it last night. Between his talk and his book, I learned a lot yesterday! I'm going to finish it this weekend, and then I'll write more about it.
