ONE LIST. ONE SECRET PAST. ONE SPECIAL LITTLE BOY.
Jake Emmons has a well-known list of requirements for a wife. Love isn’t one of them. He simply wants a partner to make a life with and is confident that Estelle is a perfect fit.
Estelle is torn between her attraction to Jake and the need to protect secrets. Even at the cost of her heart, she must keep her nephew, Malachi, safe. Marriage would seem a reasonable solution and yet it could be the very thing to destroy everything.
When the past catches up and her secrets are exposed, Jake must decide what is more important; his list of requirements or his heart.
That was another wild ride of emotions. As serious as some of the story was, I laughed out loud during the barn brawl scene. I got the visual of Carrie giving one of the men what he deserved. 😂 She is one feisty woman, that’s for sure. I also enjoyed the epilogue. I hadn’t expected such a jump in time, but it was interesting.
Book Four in the NW Wind Series, “Where the Wind Calls Home” is Jake and Estelle’s story and takes the reader back to the familiar setting of the previous three books. We met Estelle in book three so already know that lonely bachelor Jake has his eye on her as ideal wife material. Estelle can cook and clean. She is a strong woman and a hard worker. She is also aunt to the adorable little Malachi, whom Jake thinks the world of. The situation seems perfect except for one tiny fly in the ointment, Jake is honest with Estelle that he doesn’t love her and Estelle will not consider marriage without love.
But is there more to Estelle than meets the eye? What or who is she running from? And are Estelle’s secrets ones that Jake would be able to accept? Wholesome and sweet, this book series is for lovers of gentle historical fiction and tugs at the heartstrings with its stories of strong men and even stronger women trying to forge new lives in the pioneering West.
Building up a community of characters book by book, there is a lovely sense of familiarity as the reader turns the pages and becomes immersed once again in their lives.
I loved the characters of Malachi and Ol’ Charlie; they really added humour and credibility to the story. I wasn’t a big fan of the character of Jake Emmons in the third book but he redeemed himself in this one. The reader gets the full picture of why he thinks and acts like he does.
Writing action scenes can be particularly difficult and if they’re not done right the scenes seem wooden and unbelievable. The action scenes near the end of this book really stand out and are very well written. The pace of the writing and the description made me feel like I was right there alongside the characters.
It’s always nice to return to Oregon City, where the characters feel comfortable and familiar and you feel invested. You’re rooting for them to find their HEA.
I thoroughly enjoyed "Where the Wind Calls Home". First, I want to adopt Malachi! that little boy stole my heart! and second, everyone should be blessed and have an Ol' Charlie in their life. Those two were newer characters in the series and wonderful to meet. The other characters I already knew from the earlier "Wind" books in the series, just got to know them better. I wanted to yell at Estelle to marry Jake, but as the story progressed I understood why she did not accept his proposals until later. Even though he was right: they would make a good team. I loved all of the action scenes, I felt like I was there! If I'm ever in a fight I want Carrie on my side! I better not say too much more, I don't want to spoil it for those who haven't had a chance to read it yet.
Perfect way to get out of a reading slump! As with the other books in this series, Charli draws you into the story with vivid imagery and relatable characters. It’s easy to get lost in the rolling hills and country living of the west set on these pages.
Fans of sweet and western romance will enjoy this.
West advertises an HEA for her books, yet she still lures me in with a “will they or won’t they” every single time. It was no different in Where the Wind Calls Home. Her artful blend of angsty romance, solid friendships, and worrisome troublemakers made for another great story within her NW Wind series.
Love it! Wonderful addition to the book series with relatable characters and a romance that keeps you reading with much joy, laughter and a little frustration at men being stupid sometimes. Can't wait for the next book from this writer.
The main couple Jake and Estelle fight their attraction to each other with seemingly logical reasons from both of them. The outcome of the story is amazing! It will have you on the edge of your seat!!
I like Estelle a lot. Jake never won me over, and he's lucky she's a more forgiving woman than I. Yes, I am writing this as if they're real people lol. Ol' Charlie was great, Malachi a sweetie, and someone should've slapped Lillian. Another solid book from Charli!
