Picked this up from my to-read pile because I thought it was North Woods.
== WHAT I LIKED ABOUT IT ==
The outrage. It provoked some strong emotions. The manipulation, the cruelty, the abuse of power, the subjugation. People just behaving really badly.
I think the mystery elements were done really well. The pacing was really good. I never got bored, nor impatient. It was just a really great slow burn.
A good mystery needs to let the reader feel a step or two ahead of the detective. Readers want to feel smart and clever. The story allowed for this, while reserving some elements of the mystery for twists and reveals that were surprising but never implausible or totally random. It was really well crafted!
In a book of great woman characters, Alice was probably the most interesting. We're introduced to her at her worst, and then given the story of her journey and decline.
== WHO I'D RECOMMEND IT TO ==
Mystery fans. As a former summer camp counselor, I was hooked by the opening paragraphs about a counselor discovering one of their campers is missing. But don't come into this thinking it's about summer camp. I mean it is, but it quickly blossoms out into something much bigger.
