Wow. Where do I even start with this book? You know how sometimes the rantings of someone seem too unbelievable that you figure it's a joke and it's almost entertaining? But then you realize they actually believe it and they're trying to get others to believe it and it pretty much makes you sick? That's this book. The medical studies that are cited are odd. Now, I know I haven't read many medical studies, but at least three of the studies cited the Bible as a source or invoked ideas of how they think God will/ has reacted... and I don't really think that's typical of medical studies. So that was interesting.
I get the feeling that this book is what cemented a lot of false beliefs that some people still hold about AIDS. It really plays up the possibility of casual contact even though they have no evidence for it. At one point a children's hospital doctor is cited as a source for how homosexuality is the root cause of AIDS... like... if you're working as a pediatrician, is human sexuality and/ or origin of AIDS probably your area of expertise?
There are lots of "likely" or "probably" or "just might" used over and over and they use one example of one bathhouse at least four times to create a generalization.
An interesting read in the historical sense, to get a feel for where we've been in our knowledge and how far we've come.
THIS IS SCHOLARSHIP IN ITS PERFECT FORM. AND IT WAS WRITTEN WHEN WE DID KNOW THAT AIDS CAN LIVE OUTSIDE OF THE BODY UP TO 12 DAYS ACCORDING TO THE PASTEUR INSTITUTE IN FRANCE. GENE ANTONIO, WE LOVE YOUR HONESTY.
The worst book ever written about AIDS. The fact that the author was a Lutheran minister should have been sufficient to ward off anyone with a speck of intelligence. The real cover-up was that AIDS was not spreading through heterosexual contact, and Michael Fumento did a splendid job of debunking this sort of hysteria in his book, The Myth of Heterosexual AIDS.
