Britain was acknowledged as supreme on the high seas in the Napoleonic wars, but her supremacy was constantly challenged by her centuries-old enemies, France and Spain. She could not let her navies relax for one moment.
Fox, battle-scarred and weary but still fighting, has fought his way back to England with great honour. Still, the high lords and dukes find it hard to accept this man as an equal.
He joins with the Knights of the Road to settle a few scores—for the battle on land between men still raged as did the battle battle at sea between ships. But Fox's cunning made him master of the seas, and he was not willing to bow to another...
Fox never has a little luck, either good or bad, and usually its bad. Sailing with a weak captain he essentially controls (but likes), Fox manages to battle with the aging and poorly-constructed Furieuse to great skill but still is put ashore at half pay and apparently forgotten. He spends his time in various ways including slipping into his namesake and Uncle's old profession for a short time. Finally, he's picked up for a new ship and there demonstrates enormous skill and leadership while Admiral Cloughton sails aboard his vessel.
Will Fox finally get his recognition? Is his slight interest with Captain Saunders going to pay off?
