This was such a good book until the end 😪

plot: Alexa is half Native American and half English. Her father (Gordon)saved her mother when she had been beaten and had amnesia. Gordon let her return to her tribe when her memory returned. She promised to send their daughter to Gordan when she grows up. So Alexa grew up among the Native Americans. She was taught the language and the ways of the whites by a priest. This story begans with her journey to her English father.

Gordon is ecstatic to have his daughter returned to him. He teaches Alexa all about his plantation. Alexa also gets along with her stepmother and half siblings. They think she's a product of his "first" marriage. Things are great! Unfortunately, Gordon must return to England after his brother dies. Alexa doesn't have time to adjust to England before Queen Anne betroths her to Laird Cedric. Now, Alexa must adjust to her grumpy husband and another foreign land.

To keep his father out of prison, Cedric is forced to marry some pampered English woman. Cedric plans to annul the marriage in a year. He will dump Alexa with his cousins. Unfortunately, he didn't count on a woman like Alexa. Alexa makes Cedric laugh, something he hasn't done in years. Still, Cedric runs/leaves her, but Alexa continues to occupy his mind.

When he receives a letter from his cousins about his wife's disturbing behavior, Cedric hurries to fetch her. He's shocked to discover his wife wearing animal hides, and hunting with a bow and arrow. This has an effect on him! He realizes that she's magnificent and he's proud to have her as his wife! Slowly, Alexa learns to trust him enough with the truth of her family. These two fall deeply in love. Now, Alexa has to prove her worth to his English hating clan. If they don't approve, he could be removed as Laird. No matter what, Cedric will never let Alexa go!

like:
1. Alexa was a total bada**! She's the ultimate survivalist. I also like how she accepts life's difficulties with a clear level head.
2. Cedric was my kind of H. I'm a sucker for the grumpy H and a sunshine h. It's wonderful when Alexa breaks through Cedric's tough exterior.
3. The romance was perfect and believable. These two were perfect for each other!

dislikes:
1. The author needed to learn about the laws of succession. Gordan can't just choose his illegitimate grandson as his heir after his son died. Alexa isn't really legitimate and the title would have been passed to a male member on the paternity side not a through a daughter.
2. This was a 5 star book until the last 30%. The couple break up after a silly mixup and are separated for 14 years. This was not necessary and ruined a perfect romance. Later, the story does improve, but it was a little late for me.

Conclusion: This book reminded me a lot of The Lion's Lady by Julie Garwood. There were many similarities. Unfortunately, thanks to a time jump, this was the weaker version. Still, I enjoyed this book and I'm glad I tried it. I would have liked to have tried the next book in series but .....🤷‍♀️. I bet people didn't read this book because of the ugly bookcover 🤔
