A children’s natural world book, Superheroes of Nature by Georges Feterman channels comic book hero traits to various creatures. Subtitled Incredible Skills to Survive and Thrive, each of the featured animals, insects, reptiles or birds is given a superhero quality. Subdivided into six chapters, each picture states its scientific name, description, location, habitat and of course superpower. With brilliant life-like photography (source referenced in an addendum), this book will encourage all children into nature and is a most valuable educative tool. The variety of creatures isn’t all the usual ones, which makes this a truly valuable addition to any children’s library collection with its must have five star rating. With thanks to Quarto Publishing Group and the author, for an uncorrected advanced reader copy for review purposes. As always, the opinions herein are totally my own and freely given.

This really, really strong book acts as one of those school library-friendly books showcasing superlative animals. For me it won from having great photography (including animals in poses I’d never seen before), a sensible, scientific yet light approach, and things I never knew. I’d never heard a honey bear called a tamandua before (the critter responsible for the pose that was new to me), I’d certainly never heard slow lorises part-ingest some poison from glands near their elbows to ensure their bite is toxic to attackers, and I’d certainly never even seen a zebra tenrec. For scope and research, this wins hands down.

It does force me to talk of a bugbear of mine – the book that declares all these animals unique and never explains why. I think this just mentions evolution enough – it certainly never fully explains it, even if it would take but half a page (trust me, I’ve seen it done) – to get into my good books. And boy, is this a good book. I thought, as part of a series (or at least a brace) of such volumes, this would be cheap and quick. It’s nothing like. So this look at the most weaponised, the best at building societies, the beasts with the oddest-looking mate-baiting equipment, and the plain immortal, is compelling science and nature notes, and I’d defy any student to not find something to engage with.

Superheroes of Nature: Incredible Skills to Survive and Thrive by Georges Feterman is a children's nonfiction book with full color photos and interesting text celebrating biodiversity and nature. From the Borneo ant to the flying dragon, find out all about these amazing animals and the extraordinary abilities that make them the superheroes of our planet. For example a hammerhead shark can see 180 degrees, the webbed gecko can glide across the desert sand, and the springbok is super fast! For each animal readers will discover their superpower, super stats, and super facts about them and some additional information about how they used their super skills in the wild.

Superheroes of Nature is another visually appealing book from the Animal Powers series, like Superpowers of Nature: Wild Wonders of the World, which I also recently read and reviewed. The chosen photographs are attention grabbing and does a delightful job of illustrating the features and actions described in the text of the book. I though the book was well organized and balanced, delivering interesting and informative text in accessible lengths along with the bight photographs. I think this book, and the series to be honest, will be a hit with readers interested in animals and science. It would be a valuable addition to school and classroom libraries as well as the public library and personal collections.

This beautiful nonfiction text shows large and detailed photographs of special and unique animals. The is quite a bit of text to read, but I think that young readers who enjoy looking at the pictures to learn about the animals as much as they might learn from reading. I could definitely see my grade three students interested in this book and would definitely recommend it. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for giving me the chance to read and review this book!

Great book for children who love animals and research.

I enjoy books like this because they include many uncommon animals that children are not overly familiar with.
Great for classrooms and home libraries
