Immortalis is a stand-alone story by Nathalie Gray.
This story takes place in France and is about a secret government project known as ‘immortalis’ and the love between Danielle and Bjorn.
Danielle is an elite soldier selected for project immortalis for her great strength and abilities. Her body was regenerated with metal, enamel, and nanobots to give her extra special hearing, sight, strength, and healing abilities. Her body is more machine than human and the last step in the transformation is a cocktail of vampire blood and nanobots. Bjorn is a centuries old vampire, taken by the soldiers to harvest his blood. When Danielle and Bjorn first lock eyes, they’re both drawn to one another. She fights her unusual feelings for the vampire and reports for further testing. Bjorn escapes his captives and Danielle finds herself trapped in an elevator with the sexually charged vampire. Instead of fighting her, he simply kisses her, before being taken away again. Blood is taken from the vamp and the soldiers are infused with the vampire-nanobot cocktail. As times passes, the soldiers begin to convulse, vomit blood, and eventually die. Danielle awakens from her death in a body bag with no pulse, a set of fangs, and her first thought is about freeing Bjorn. Yosef, her rival, also awakens but his first thought is to kill the competition. They both race to Bjorn side, one to save and the other to kill. Danielle breaks down a steel door and escapes with Bjorn. Her rival catches up with them and they battle while Bjorn drives them to safety. Danielle is knocked unconscious while the nanobots heal and restore her. When Danielle awakens, she finds Bjorn has driven them to safety and they must walk to the next town to find another form of transportation. Danielle is turned on by Bjorn and they share a quick romp in the truck. They find another vehicle and rather than wait for Bjorn, she attacks the first person she sees to feed on their blood. Bjorn explains she must learn to control herself to survive as a vampire. He buys her some clothing, since she’s still dressed in a sports bra and shorts and now covered in blood. They head to one of his homes, where they share another hot sex scene. When Danielle discovers that the home is in a woman’s name she becomes overwhelmed with jealousy and leaves him. Bjorn is stubborn and lets her go, although already regretting her loss. He logs onto his laptop and checks the news, only to discover the government has issued a warrant for an armed and dangerous woman, Danielle. He quickly packs a bag and searches for her. Danielle is in the park and about to be jumped by two vampires. Bjorn arrives just in time and they flee the scene with the sound of police sirens in the background. They confess their feelings for one another and decide to take the train to his hometown. They’ve been followed and trick the police by leading them onto the train and then switching at the last minute. Danielle changes her hair colour to hide her identity and they spend the next six hours having on sex on the train. Danielle realizes they’ve been tracking her through her computerized brain and manages to disconnect the internal GPS. They arrive at the station, where Yosef is waiting for them along with the local authorities and her former boss. Bjorn is shot, her former boss plants a bomb at the station, and she fights with Yosef. Bjorn recovers from what she thought was a fatal shot, and she takes out Yosef just in time for the bomb to explode. Bjorn and Danielle manage to get free and head to his hometown. They get new id cards and return to his house by the sea. They spend lots of time having hot sex and plan to spend their lives making each other happy.

Cyborg Danielle envisions her 700-year-old vampire sire as a fisherman from Norway - and I get images of the Gorton's Fisherman. As a blond, giant Norwegian vampire. On the deck of a fishing vessel. With fangs. Fish stick dinners will never be the same again.

On another note, I really enjoyed this book.

Started out well, with an interesting premise, but the plot fizzled out into too much mediocre sex. The author overused several phrases far beyond the point of annoyance. Worse, Gray indulges in thin-bashing; repetively praising the heroine's 'sturdy frame' while bitterly criticizing slender women (and men!) . Ugh. Nothing kills my buzz faster than an author inserting her own personal insecurities into the hero's POV.

Also, the cover is one of the worst I have ever seen. Hideous! I am so glad I only saw it after finishing the book.
