A Kiss for a Warthog
The towns of Oldwick and Quimby were constantly feuding. But Quimby had one thing that Oldwick didn't: a warthog for their zoo. The Mayor of Quimby couldn't let this situation continue, and ordered a warthog from Africa. But when the warthog arrives, she refuses to leave the ship until someone gives her a welcoming kiss.

This is a cute little story by the creators of the wonderful Cranberry books.
In order to compete with a rival town, Oldwick purchases a female warthog for its zoo, but Allegra, as she's know, refuses to get off the ship without a welcoming kiss. Who would want to kiss a warthog? Perhaps a certain resident of the rival town's zoo . . .

This book is about two towns who are at constant odds as to who's town is the best. Then the town comes together at the end as one. I like the unity that comes at the end. Could possibly use this book for predicting or summarizing.

Allegra the warthog arrives in Oldwick and sees the passengers getting hugs and kisses from the people on shore. Allegra waits on the gangplank for hers. Who will be the first to kiss a warthog?

This book is very comical. I would read to second and third graders. Two towns are big rivals but in the end they need each other to solve a problem. A wart hog brings about cooperation and harmony. Great book.

The towns of Oldwick and Quimby are bitter rivals. They are constantly trying to outdo each other. So of course it is unacceptable that Quimby's zoo has a warthog and Oldwick's zoo doesn't. The mayor quickly sends for a warthog and the town eagerly awaits the arrival of Allegra. Allegra picks up on people's activities while on board the ship so when she arrives in Oldwick she expect to be greeted like all people are being, with a kiss. And she won't leave the gangplank or let anyone pass her until she gets one. The Mayor of Oldwick isn't eager to volunteer is own lips and neither is anyone else. There's just one solution...one that will change the relationship of Oldwick and Quimby forever.
The illustration in this is a teensy bit dated, but dated in a charming way. I thoroughly enjoyed watching Allegra learn to do human things on the ship, and the way her demand for a kiss breaks down the barriers between Oldwick and Quimby. It's a lightly humorous story about how working together is better than constantly being in competition.
