What are the biblical arguments which have convinced the overwhelming majority of Bible believers for the last two centuries that the Lord wants His people to abstain? What are the great differences between the wine production of Bible times and the industry of today? Here is vital information on a topic slipping out of attention.
Gives a good challenge but in the end is disappointing. The book would be great if it argued against drinks exceeding the assumed maximum alcohol level of the Bible times (14%) etc. But the case for *total* abstinence from the mere fact of huge alcohol misuse by non-christians, if consistently applied, would have devastating effects for a number of other things that are greatly misused in our time (food, sex, weapons, medicine, sports, leisure, tv etc.).
Still, alcohol consumption in our world is way worse than it has ever been, and the book does well to point this out. Drunkenness must be rebuked more strongly and societies should limit the selling of alcohol A LOT.
Pardon the pun, but the book was a little dry. But overall a help to me. The 1st part of the book was interesting in that Masters explains how something could be right at a point of time & wrong in another. I’ve never heard of “how” wine was made or used in Bible days so that was enlightening. Short chapters for easy reading. Worth the read if you are looking for the right & wring of alcohol.
I tried very hard to give this a fair shot. The tone of this book suggests it is a nail in the coffin to alcohol consumption but it delivers only a weak, hail mary. One major argument is based on speculation leveled before any Scripture is examined and the other is inconsistent with the rest of the way Christians are called to live in the world. Could have made a better case by arguing that abstinence isn't the law, but may be wise. Beneficial, even if drinking is acceptable.
