Soleil and Flarence are immortal Genies who can bend the fundamental forces of the universe through willpower alone. For centuries, they have considered themselves the most formidable beings in the world, but some newcomers just might give them a run for their money. Magic has always been limited to living things. Throughout his life, Soleil has never come across an object with supernatural capabilities. Now, a human has somehow constructed guns with the ability to fire spells. Genies are normally resistant to offensive magic, but Soleil knows from experience that the enchanted revolvers harm all creatures equally. Resurrection is one of the few limitations to a Genie’s abilities. Not even magic should be able to bring a person back from death. Recently, though, Flarence saw a corpse not only rise but also fight. Endowed with incredible speed and strength, the revived man seeks revenge on his murderers. To make matters worse, Darren (the third member of the Genie “family”) is still missing. He's been lying low, biding his time, but hasn’t forgotten about Officer Tymbir, and has every intention of settling their score. Darren, the revived corpse, and the man with the magic guns have a list of people to kill, and are eager to spill blood. With the help of Mohinaux and Claire, Soleil and Flarence rush to locate them, uncover the sources of their powers, and find a way to stop them.
Hugh Fritz is a fan of monsters, mad scientists, sorcerers, and anything that involves being with incredible powers beating each other senseless. After years of writing research papers, he decided it was time to give reality a rest and let his imagination run wild. This is his first book, and it has been an illuminating experience making the transition from reader to author.
He was born in Chicago where he spent most of his life until moving to the Southwest in 2015. He finds inspiration bouncing ideas off other novelists in a critique group, but hours of television and finding the right songs to put him in the writing mood play an important role as well. He has no plans to end the Genies' adventures here, so be on the lookout for more magical mischief in the next book of the Mystic Rampage series.
Book 1 in the series was said to be: "Fantasy Thriller is the best way to describe Hugh Fritz’s Made to be Broken and the thrill lies in the fantasy to say the least!"
Before I tell you too much about book 2, I must say this: Book 2 was just as wonderfully thrilling as book 1...BUT... you can absolutely read one without the other. Book 2 can stand just beautifully on it's own!
Public Display of Aggression is thrilling and not at all predictable. I wasn’t sure what direction this tale would go in and it is clear that Hugh Fritz is a seasoned reader and talented storyteller. The plot twists were many and well planned out. I enjoyed keeping up with Soleil in this adventure!
Public Display of Aggression is a wonderful blend of thrill and fantasy - a fantastically written story that took me as a reader on a much needed adventure!
I just finished PUBLIC DISPLAY OF AGGRESSION by Chicago native Hugh Fritz, and I must say, it was a queasy, mad-dash of fantasy, gore, and fun.
Giving me equal parts The Walking Dead and The Big Sleep vibes, this science-fix romp was such a good way to end my month-long reading rut!
I loved the synopsis: immortal Genies on the hunt to stop enchanted zombie-esque creatures with their own murdress motives and figure out what gives these revived corpses their powers. This book combined probably some of my biggest fears - bugs and zombies - was one twist after another and the author put in just the right amount of action and guts. I loved the whodunnit feel of it all, and while I had some trouble keeping the characters organized in my head, I felt like they all had nicely fleshed out personalities and quirks. The conversations were realistic and easy, allowing the reader to really focus on the ACTION. And there was no shortage of violence or action. Also, as a Chicago native myself, I can’t help but love the fact that my guy Hugh made this a fun romp through the greatest city in the world.
This was the second book in the series, but it’s a standalone and was perfectly easy to follow without previously reading the first.
Major thanks to @bookdetour for the gifted review copy of this super awesome adventure.

When writing a sequel, there are two strategies for an author to consider: one is to explain things that happened in book one on the way, and the second is to let the reader figure matters out on their own if they happened to have missed book number one. The author of this book opted for the former option, and I was unfortunate enough to start reading the series in the middle.
While this has had an effect on my enjoyment of the book, there is still a lot of good to be said about it. The concept itself is incredibly entertaining: genies realizing that they are no longer the mightiest beings in the universe is an idea that can go in many directions, and the book certainly goes through many different scenarios! The use of mythology in the book is also fun - there are many mythological creatures mentioned, many of which are debunked as being accidental discoveries or byproducts from genies' magic. Thirdly, magic is explained by science in a way that is both interesting and full of hope.
There were scenes that were lost on me due to my lack of prior reading and I felt as though some clarity was lacking in certain scenes, where I needed to go back in the chapter/skip forward to figure out what happened and why. Despite this, I think the book can make a solid impression on someone who reads book #1 first.
This book was provided to me in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
This is the second book in The Mystic rampage Series. I haven't read the first book, but I was told this book could be read as a standalone story. For most part it was fine but I could certainly feel some gaps in between, will have to read the first part later.
This book has a cocktail of myth, magic and science all blended into a story that kept me gripping to the book, not a dull moment with this one. There are genies, zombies, time travellers and even monsters, what more could you ask for!
The story begins with a revenge plot for a man, who happens to be a genie, hunting a group of men responsible for his wife's death but this group of men is being protected by another genie, who was his friend before these events. In other set of events another genie is in pursuit of a mysterious supernatural being who is killing a bunch of people in a strange manner. There also happens to be a man wreaking havoc whose methods are unconventional. Later we find that these three events are intertwined and it all leads to a much bigger catastrophe.
For a long time the motives of the characters were unclear and it was hard to pin down who the real protagonists are, which adds to the mystery. The way the writer has connected supernatural abilities to science is pretty interesting and not too complicated for us commoners. It is a fun and easy read, highly entertaining. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it.
Author Hugh Fritz does it again! A fantastic blend of action and modern-day character interactions with magic and supernatural mayhem, this book perfectly balances mythology and character-driven narratives. The mature tone the author takes with his writing helps separate his work from other fantasy-driven narratives, while also crafting a story that allows for newcomers to enjoy it just as much as fans of the first book in this series.
It is the balance of character growth and mythology that really defines this narrative. The author has crafted a unique cast of characters, each with their own distinct voice and personality that draws the reader in. What is most interesting is their evolution throughout the narrative, as characters who enter the story in a terrifying manner can just as easily become the lynchpin to stopping an even bigger threat.
The Verdict
Action-packed, entertaining, and brilliantly written, author Hugh Fritz’s “Public Display of Aggression” is a must-read action and fantasy-thriller of 2021. The perfect read to escape reality and filled with twists and turns the reader won’t soon forget, fans of the series both old and new will be on the edge of their seat to check out this fantastic story.
