Provides information on the basics of Windows 7 and personal computers, covering such topics as hardware, applications, files and folders, searching the Internet, playing music and movies, working with pictures, home networks, and security.
A picture is worth a thousand words. When trying to explain computer basics, it's priceless. This is one of my go-to books when helping patrons at the library who are first-time or beginning computer users. Not only can I show them the pictures as I'm providing one-on-one assistance, but they can take the book home with them for further study and practice.
The author is detail-oriented and an effective teacher. Miller takes the reader from the absolute basics of labeling the hardware and physical components of a computer, to using the mouse, getting around the desktop and then into progressively more challenging subjects. Each lesson, if you will, is composed of illustrations and numbered steps making it easy to follow along. Tips and notes in the margins, although not integral to the lesson, take the reader further down the path of that topic.
Once you've mastered the basics, it's on to more challenging subjects for beginning users. Do you need help setting up an e-mail account? Do you want to learn about accessing, downloading, sorting through and organizing all of those family photos your friends, kids and grandkids want to send you online? Want to learn about social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter? Care to shop online or find news that is important to you? Miller takes the reader step-by-(easy)-step with color pictures, short bursts of introductory text and numbered steps from start to finish.
As an aside, my mom signed up for her first computer class at her local senior center. This is the book they use for their classroom text.
