Memoir for Mrs. Sullavan is the delightful story of Mrs. Sullavan, cat of the poet Louis Untermeyer and his wife Bryna, who for twelve years, gave that particular kind of affection which animals and their owners find so mutually gratifying. It is a tale of encounters with butterflies, frogs, Robert Frost, New York apartments, a Connecticut home, Mrs. Sullavans amours with other animal members of the family. Cat lovers especially enjoy the pleasure of the warm relationship.
Besides being a quick, well written cat “biography,” the book is worthwhile because of the author and her husband’s connections to the literary and cultural world of the 1950’s which are interspersed throughout. My copy was a nice jacketed first edition (1966) that I bought for all of $4. There are probably other inexpensive copies available on the Internet. A great read for book and cat lovers.
