Images of Sports

Yankee Stadium: 1923-2008, New York

Rate this book
The Bronx's Yankee Stadium was designed to be the grandest, most impressive and intimidating sports arena ever. Over the years, the stadium's mystique and grandeur have been exponentially enhanced by championship boxing matches, professional and college football, Negro League games, papal visits, and the New York Yankees baseball club's iconic reputation as the gold standard of professional team sports. Yankee Stadium has also been a witness to the 20th-century development of the Bronx from a small suburb to a large urban borough, thus forging a special and complex relationship with its hometown.

An OK picture book from Arcadia Publishing. Arcadia's usual mishmash of the title subject (Yankee Stadium) and other loosely-related items (in this case, football, boxing, and the development of the Bronx.) Many of the pictures are too dark and some of the labeling is curious. And too many pictures of freeways, Bronx buildings and development, game programs (?), tickets (?), and most annoyingly, a picture of the author and his father, in the middle of book. And as with most Arcadia books, Many of the photos, especially players, are stock photos that have been seen before in dozens of other, better books.
