Excellent look at Jesus' teaching through a literary lens. I have long believed that Jesus speaks on many levels, as is apparent in his parables, but as the authors explore his use of metaphor, I am even more amazed at the depth with which he teaches. Those who insist on trying (because I have met very few who actually do) to read the Bible literally are missing so much when they only look at the superficial meanings. The authors suggest that the relationship between Jesus and God (as Father and Creator) are so very complex and so far beyond our understanding that Jesus MUST speak in metaphor to give us some idea that we can relate to and understand. Like some other authors I have read, they, too, suggest that many of his parables and other metaphors are very subversive to the culture of the day - so again he couches his teachings in metaphor. Very informative book that offers not just discussion but opportunities to for the reader to participate through examples and spaces in which to write and make notes.
