Librarians help people find the information they need. They work both in the public eye and behind the scenes. Give readers the inside scoop on what it's like to have the job of a librarian. Readers will learn about different types of librarians, the tools they use, and how people get this exciting, fast-paced job.
A well-written book covering a wide scope of the many things that librarians do... except the author went a little too far and added things that librarians don't do. Is everyone working at a hospital a doctor? No? In the same way, not everyone working at a library is a librarian. The discrepancy begins with the book's cover. A young man is checking out a book to a patron. In case you didn't know, that's what a Circulation clerk does. The clerks who work at the Circulation Desk check out books so you can take them home and, when you return the books, they check them back in. Librarians don't do that. Similarly, librarians don't shelve books back onto the shelves. There are people called shelvers who do that. I really wish the author had researched the subject before writing this book instead of giving incorrect information. Everything else was presented correctly, written well for its audience, with nice photographs, but when you write a nonfiction book, make sure the facts you present are correct.
Diverse representation of librarians and patrons. This book describes the basic job functions of librarians at a variety of libraries. There is a nice section on famous librarians at the end. All photos have clear captions. Nice page of "fast facts" at the end. There is also a glossary, index, table of contents, and a listing of additional books and websites for more information. Some of the photos and wording seem a little dated, but overall this is a decent introduction to the job of a librarian.
So refreshing to see a library book that depicts a MODERN library and the many types of materials we have to offer, as well as a very diverse depiction of people who work in and patronize libraries.
