В этой книге впервые собраны все произведения о приключениях известного любителям фантастики инспектора Бел Амора (фирменного героя Бориса Штерна), вечно попадающего в разные вероятные и невероятные, веселые и невеселые космические переделки. Известные читателю произведения уточнены, дополнены и переработаны автором. Роман "Вперед, конюшня!" ранее не издавался.
Книга дополнена предисловием Бориса Стругацкого, автобиографией и письмами Бориса Штерна.

Работал разнорабочим в Сургуте и Нижневартовске. Переехал в Одессу. Окончил филологический факультет Одесского Государственного Университета.
В 1971 году послал свою первую повесть Борису Стругацкому и получил его одобрение. Первый рассказ (юмореска «Психоз») был опубликован в 1975 году. Произведения малоизвестного автора привлекают внимание Бориса Хазанова и Штерн начинает сотрудничество с журналом «Химия и жизнь». В период с 1976 года и до конца 1980-х он напечатал несколько научно-фантастических рассказов: «Фокусники» (1976), «Дом» (1980), «Чья планета?» (1980) и другие.
С начала 1990-х годов Борис Штерн начинает больше печататься. Расширяется его жанровый диапазон — он обращается к сказкам, сатире, социальной и реалистической прозе. Одно из наиболее известных произведений того периода повесть «Записки динозавра», а также продолжение цикла рассказов о приключениях инспектора Бел Амора.
Выходят сборники Бориса Штерна «Кто там?», «Рыба любви» и другие. Издаётся роман «Эфиоп», который получает премию «Бронзовая Улитка». Однако в ноябре 1998 года он неожиданно умирает. Роман про инспектора Бел Амора «Вперёд, конюшня!» вышел уже после смерти автора.
Борис Штерн — лауреат премии «Старт» за сборник «Чья планета?», был признан лучшим фантастом Европы (до него этой чести в Восточной Европе удостаивались лишь братья Стругацкие и Станислав Лем). В 1999 году на конгрессе фантастов России «Странник» писателю посмертно присуждена премия «Паладин фантастики».

This is a collection of short stories and a novella, linked by the main character-protagonist, inspector Bel Amor. The very name is a parody on ‘new names’ in SF, like Strugatsky brothers’ character Mak Sim, for Bel Amor sounds like Belomorkanal (Russian: Беломорканал) is a Soviet brand of cheap cigarettes. This may hint on the fact that this is a humorous SF, like English language SF author Robert Sheckley. The title of this book is Adventures of Inspector Bel Amor. The author, Boris Shtern, was born and died in Kyiv, while, as a lot of the authors of the period wrote mostly in russian.

Чья планета?/Whose planet? the earliest published SF story, from 1975 (there have been several versions over the ages), which introduces the character and his companion, A few words about Bel Amor and the Stabilizer. Lt. Bel Amor is a middle-aged man with sleepy eyes, he doesn't shave on a mission, he prefers to be away from his superiors, that's why he's stuck in lieutenants. Not a fool, but smart in moderation. His biography is not interesting - he was born, studied, married. A few words about Stabilizer: three-meter tall ship's robot. He's not bad-looking, but he's a fool. When Bel Amor sleeps, Stabilizer is on dog watch: he holds the wheel, looks at the compass and instruments. and starts making fun at SF genre cliches, like Then they had a purely technical conversation, diluted with humor for greater interest-a conversation that long-suffering heroes of the science fiction genre are obliged to have in order to inform the reader about the settlement of planets, about exploration in space, about the difficulties of their work. The plot of the story is that Bel Amor attempted to mark a newly found planet for Earth, while another species tries to do the same. 4*
Спасать человека/To save a man Bel Amor and Stabilizer received a SOS signal from a local space garbage, but in fact it is a crazy robot, who lures them – one that follows the three Asimov’s laws, but considers itself a man, and humans as bio-robots… 4*
Досмотр-1/Inspection 1 the inspector works at customs, and a famous alien smuggler. Bel Amor knows that there are forbidden tobacco cigarettes, but cannot find them. 3*
Досмотр-2/Inspection-2 the same smuggler, and this time there is a search for stolen regalia, while the whole ship is filled with shit (literally). The inspector does not want to go deep into the cargo and begs smuggler to go away… 3*
Бесы, или В погоне за бессмертием/Demons, or In Pursuit of Immortality. a quite different psychological SF, a society, where talents got everything, but talentless live is a ghetto (the title word-plays – Бесы/Demons and без- which is equivalent to English -less), Bel Amor is a writer/poet, but he is deemed talentless and sent to the ghetto. There he finds a lottery ticket that won a right to get a poet talent, but the ticket should be cashed in a few hours… 4*
Кто там?/Who's there? a novella, where Bel Amor and his robot, got captured by a strange space oddity (the vocabulary used to describe is based on fairy tales), and to investigate it more and more resources are sent 3*

(a two-act fantasy naval play from the life of the illegitimate daughter of Inspector Bel Amor, consisting of one single two-letter word, with a final sex scene and with remarks for the director), a parody on based real facts at the time of writing – dividing Soviet Black sea fleet and setting borders between states, even if main players are a NATO general, Georgian, Ossetin, Romanian and Bulgarian admirals… 3*

Inspector Bel Amor has a fossilized human jaw found on Mars, which he showed this jaw to his dentist, and the dentist only spread his hands in amazement: the teeth and fillings of the human lower jaw found on Mars were identical to the teeth and fillings of Bel Amor's lower jaw. Now the inspector goes to Mars to find out what has happened to him. 3.5*
Туман в десантном ботинке/Fog in a paratrooper's boot here different beings living on and around a cemetery (includes a crow, a fish skeleton, an old horse and a worm, who lives a paratrooper's boot formerly of Bel Amor) discuss the meaning of life. 3*
Жена от Карданвала/A wife from Driveshaft. Bel Amor was married trice and the third divorce was to loud, so that his superiors wanted to fire him (not to soil the shining image of their workers) so, he is on a mission to the Driveshaft star cluster to work as a bodyguard of a local boss… 2.5*
