Who is Jake Maddox? Athlete, author, world-traveler–or all three? He has surfed in Hawaii, scuba-dived in Australia, and climbed the mountains of Peru and Alaska. His books range from the most popular team sports to outdoor activities to survival adventures and even to auto racing. His exploits have inspired numerous writers to walk in his footsteps–literally! Each of his stories is stamped with teamwork, fair play, and a strong sense of self-worth and discipline. Always a team-player, Maddox realizes it takes more than one man (or woman) to create a book good enough for a young reader. He hopes the lessons learned on the court, field, or arena and the champion sprinter pace of his books can motivate kids to become better athletes and lifelong readers.

Cute book.
I read this at bedtime to my boys. They love hockey.

However, some of the things that happened in the book really wouldn't happen in real hockey.
The game would not be held up for a skater to change into goalie gear. Ice time at rinks are regulated. You only get so much time for the game in Youth hockey.
If the goalie gets hurt and you don't have a back up, you would have to skate with 6 skaters. (instead of 5 skaters and a goalie.) The skater could stand in the goal but he/she can't cover the puck in the crease.

Also the deal with Jill being a girl on the boys team. That would be a non-issue as it would have been taken care of before the season started. And where are the parents watching the game??
The parents would have been all over that. Hockey costs money, they wouldn't just keep a kid out of hockey if the family paid for it.

Cute book, like I said. Kids enjoyed it! We really enjoyed the discussion questions at the back. Although we talked about what really happens within Youth Hockey.

Nitpicky, yeah, I know. But we are very involved in hockey.

Backup Goalie by Jake Maddox is a great book and I recommend it to middle school students and people who are into hockey. This book is about Jamie and his friends, Brett and Jill. Their first game is facing the Spartans, a big team, but before they play the coach on the Spartans says that a girl can't play with the boys so Jill has to go to the bench. Later on in the game, Brett their star goalie gets hurt and now Jamie doesn't have his other two best players or his two best friends on the ice. In the next game, Jamie's coach says to Jamie you have to play goalie. Will Jamie be able to help the team get to the state championship? I like this book because it has teamwork, friendship, hard work, and if you play hockey you can relate to this book well.

I just read a great book called Backup Goalie by Jake Maddox. The main character is Jamie. The best parts of the book are when Jamie has to take Brett's spot at goalie. If you like sports I recommend this book to you.
