The Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore was authorized by Congress in 1966 thanks primarily to the efforts of Senator Paul Douglas of Illinois. The Indiana Dunes State Park was set up by the state of Indiana in 1916. The two of them pretty much cover the shore of Lake Michigan from Gary to Michigan City, Indiana and total over 17,000 acres. My family connection to the area goes back to my paternal grandmother's father, one of the engineers connected to the establishment of the US Steel yards and the town of Gary starting around 1906. Some years later he and some Norwegian friends bought land north of the area and across the border in Lake Charter Township, Michigan. The idea was to build summer homes. That of my family was constructed during the first world war.

So, one might say I've some roots in the area. This was likely the reason Dad bought Daniel's book back in the early eighties. It had sat around the cottage in Michigan for years before I finally got around to reading it.

Most of the material was quite familiar as I visit the Dunes regularly and have probably done all of the trails more than once.

A great guide to the Indiana dunes. It covers the formation of the dunes and the various stags in that formation process. It then describes the mostly flora and some of the fauna found in each of those areas. Lastly, it gives us a good description for the main hiking trails in the area.

My one concern i my edition of this book is from the 1970s, so I am concerned how much may have changed in the past 50 years. I cannot wait to get out to the dunes again to see what I can find.

This is an extremely old book, published more than four decades ago in 1977. Its primary usefulness would be to compare it with a modern book, like the "Best Sights to See at Indiana Dunes" published in spring 2019, to see how the park and region has changed. And it has changed.
