This book is aimed both at those who work with abused children and those who may come across the problem occasionally, but who can still play a positive role in helping children come through their difficulties. It provides an introduction to the different types and settings of abuse; the need for adults to understand their own feelings; and the difficulties faced by children. The importance of 'believing children' is emphasised.The book also looks at what can be done during and after investigation to help children though a very difficult period; the legal process is explained; the role of the extended family in providing positive support to the child is considered; and the stresses and pressures likely to be encountered by workers in this difficult field are examined. Finally, a critical review of the resources available to prevent the problem occurring is provided; the roles of the various professionals involved are explained; and a list of relevant agencies invoiced in given.
