Herbert Spencer Zim (July 12, 1909 – December 5, 1994) was a naturalist, author, editor and educator best known as the founder (1945) and editor-in-chief of the Golden Guides series of nature books.
This is a nice informative little picture book about crabs. It does not probe into controversial topics, such as why people in Maryland eat these animals; it simply describes common species of crabs and their environment and their habits.
It could have been made to order for either of two particular kinds of reader: (1) adults who read slowly, either because English is not their first language or because they're dyslexic; and (2) primary school students, especially boys, who may be intelligent enough to understand books far beyond their grade level, but whose eyes have not yet developed enough that they can comfortably read for very long. These students often look for books with large clear type, books that present small chunks of information on each page so the students can digest the books a page or two at a time. For readers in any of these categories, Zim's books have long been favorites.
