The New Thoroughbred Owners Handbook
The New Thoroughbred Owner - Handbook is a practical guide intended to help the newcomer make smart business decisions and enjoy the sport to the fullest. Owning Thoroughbred racehorses can have tremendous rewards, both emotionally and financially, but ownership also can be a costly mistake for those who have not done their homework or have unrealistic expectations. This official handbook of the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association discusses getting started in racing, purchase options, operating costs, and medication and legal issues. Newcomers are provided with resource lists and information on state incentive programs and licensing requirements. The handbook also includes a glossary of racing terms.

This book aims at enabling the thoroughbred owner to make well informed decisions by demonstrating example calculations and giving a thorough overview of what influences deviations. I appreciated the great focus on "do not shy away from asking to many questions".
pros:
easy to follow, good insights
cons:
out-dated, only US focus, only scratching the surface (could also be a positive aspect depending on what you are looking for)

Very good, very detailed breakdown of what you need to know before owning a racehorse. I will be referring back to this book when I get really serious about buying one.
