A chronology of all the sheriffs of Pend Oreille County, northeastern Washington, and all the sordid backwoods murders that haunted them. I love it when people write books like this.

The subject matter had potential to be very interesting. Unfortunately, the quality of the writing itself is somewhat disjointed and in need of a professional editor. Details were inserted that could never have been observed or reported and seemed more descriptive of what might be found in a crime novel. "His body, with rivulets of sweat running down his back and from under his arms, was sticky with perspiration. He wiped a damp sleeve across his face and walked again to the window." Overall, it was interesting history, but needlessly embellished.
