No butts about it! Because of increased interest in self-sufficient and sustainable living practices, people interested in having their own milk supply are turning to goats, which are easier to keep than cows. Whether for pets, milk, fiber, or even meat, The Complete Idiot's Guide(r) to Raising Goats provides everything a beginner needs to know about raising goats. ?According to the June 2007 issue of Better Nutrition magazine, goat's milk is gaining popularity in the United States because it is less allergenic and more easily digestible than cow's milk, and contains higher percentages of key nutrients ?Like raising chickens, raising goats ties directly into the sustainability and thrift movements
This is a good basic overview for people new to goats. The info isn't extensive but does seem to cover the essentials. This seemed more geared toward dairy than meat or fibre production. I would recommend this as an intro to goats for backyard hobby farmers or people curious if goats are a good fit for their situation. There are better choices for producers looking for more information specific to raising goats for profit/performance. Some of the info comes across as anecdotal or opinion rather than based on cold hard facts, science or vet medicine. I'm specifically referencing some of the health care sections and advice.
Also, I detest the "cheeky" title "Complete Idiots Guide-". It is really offputting and hardened my opinion of this book before I even opened the cover. And I am an asshole who generally enjoys "cheeky".
