Discusses the history of guns and gun control in the United States, relevant laws and legal cases, and the arguments posed by both sides in the debate about how much government control there should be over firearms.
I recently read the book Gun Control by Susan Dudley Gold. I learned a lot about this topic. I agree that gun control needs to have better background checks because anyone can buy a gun. In the beginning of this book the author talks about the colonial times and why having the gun control laws was a good thing so the military couldn’t force people into doing what they want because of the weapons they had. Later in the future guns got more advance and they are way more dangerous, because they have 30+ bullets in a clip and can shoot very fast. You don’t need to shoot fast as a way of defense and only be used as a way of mass murder. Many criminals were buying weapons not as a defense but just to kill people and the guns they had access too were way too dangerous. Therefore if someone has broken the law in a violent way then they should not have the right to own a gun. This is a big problem in the United States. In United States about 40% of households have a gun. We also have a huge number of deaths by guns per year, 10,000 deaths by firearms. This is a huge number because a lot of people can obtain guns very easily. In the past they have added more strict gun laws, but this doesn’t stop people there are still shootings that go on every year in United States. For example in the book they referred to the 1999 Colombia massacre, they gave great detail as the described the four hour long shooting, that two students had inside their local high school. The author had many examples and good solutions to gun control incidents that killed countless people. The Author thinks that gun control is a problem and believes that they need to be limited to some people who are criminals. One solution to this problem is that they need to have more in depth background checks before they sell guns to people. I completely agree with the authors solution I don't think people should just be able walk into to any gun store and purchase a gun. Most states do not require a background check to buy a gun. If anyone could just buy a gun then people would be at risk, even though the police does a good job at finding and putting people in jail for murder they can’t redo what already happened. So if they have background checks then they will stop the crime before it already happened. After reading this book i have acquired a lot of new information, such as the 10,000 deaths by firearms and how about 40% of people have a gun. Although you can say people need guns for protection, but you will never need it for protection if people don’t own guns at all. Over all i think this book is very informative and a must read if you are interested in this topic. There is a lot of great information in this book such as the statistics they include. I would rate this book a 9/10 because i feel there wasn’t enough pictures and charts, but the information was great. I would recommend this book to anyone that is above 11 or 12 because some statistics were a little scary to think about for a younger child.
