Intriguing story about characters from long ago and a Spanish Land grant .
Very interesting tale of an orphan with a good heart, who goes through many trials, to eventually find love among these people, who care for him and teach him as he grows up. Great descriptions of surrounding country, vaqueros , La Petrona, who falls in love with him. JS
A short read with good character development and an interesting thoughtful story. Not a typical western. Starts with a young orphan boy growing up in a brutal railroad construction camp and takes you through his growing into a man with lots of trying challenges along the way. Like the title by the way.
A nice little story. Hard to believe that some young people have such a hard life ... then and now. Toby was orphaned and jailed thru no fault of his own. Thank goodness he found some good people that stood up for him.
A short little story, but a good heartfelt read all the same. I really enjoyed it. Toby didn't do anything extraordinary in this book, but what he did do he did with conviction after life kept pooping him.
