Children have a strong and deep-rooted sensitivity to the natural world and play is the primary mechanism through which they encounter their physical environment. Based on a Play England research review, Play, naturally explores the wide-ranging values and benefits arising from children's play in natural settings and identifies the barriers compromising children's right to natural play.
Drawing on academic texts, newspaper and journal articles, promotional materials and research studies, the review indicates connections across disciplines and opens the possibility of reaffirming childhood as a period of natural emergence. Topics covered include: the biological drive to play and affiliate with nature; the benefits of play in natural settings; access to natural play spaces; and supporting and planning for natural play.
