Sorry but why did reading this feel like the author is telling little children about Chinese? The presence of Pinyin transcriptions was, in my opinion, not sufficient - unless you manage to remember the pronunciation of 10-15 characters per chapter after being told once.
Generally this was just an incredibly odd mixture of a writing style that made me feel like I was reading a "how the world works" kind of book aimed towards primary schoolers and then a surprising Jack of information I would've considered necessary.
