"This role of language in human affairs- the ways in which people communicate with one another- is the subject of this fascinating book by an eminent linguist.By relating language to the other contemporary disciplines dealing with speech and its functions- the theory of communication, statistics, symbolic logic, acoustics and neurology- Professor Whatmough has produced a challenging and comprehensive survey of a filed which is rapidly becoming one of the great sciences of modern life."
Yes, but I kind of liked that. It can be far more tiring, in my opinion, to read the kind that just condescends to furnish you with the basics of a subject. They always seem to be trying so hard to dumb things down for "the laypeople" that the actual laypeople have no idea what they're talking about! That said, it's probably not the book you want if you just need a short, relaxed overview of what the field was like back then. Some bits can get a little intense.
