The Attic Nights Of Aulus Gellius

The Attic Nights Of Aulus Gellius by Aulus Gellius. The Attic Nights is a sprawling miscellany from a 2nd-century Roman author. In Noctes Atticae the author collects conversations, anecdotes, translations, and short reflections on philosophy, rhetoric, grammar, law, history, and everyday life. The work surveys Greek and Roman thought through digressions, polemics, and careful notes on language, virtue, memory, and style. Chapters discuss Providence and Fate, the nature of pleasure, public oratory, and the origins of words; they recount stories of ancient sages, Alexander and Scipio, Acca Larentia, the Fratres Arvales, and many others, while offering commentary on translation, classical literature, and antiquarian lore. The book blends quotation and paraphrase with moral illumination, showing how an educated Roman of late antiquity approached the past to illuminate present questions. It is both a repository of learning and a testimony to the enduring value of philology, philosophy, and historical memory. The text is organized in episodes and numbered chapters, reflecting a wide and diverse curiosity about the classical world.
