"Over 100 million Americans suffer from gum disease, causing 44 % to loose all their teeth by the age of 65 and a whopping 10 Billion dollar price tag for the U.S. economy!"As if the humiliation of bad breath, an unattractive smile, pain and loss of teeth that result from untreated gum disease were not enough, new evidence is pointing to gum disease as a contributor to heart disease, stroke, death and low birth weight babies. In his new , updated edition, Dr. Sydney, a well known, Board Certified Periodontist, reveals all the dramatic advances and modern treatments now available for gum disease and dental implants; empowering today's consumer to comfortably and wisely make informed decisions regarding the health of his or her gums (Earlier editions have been read by thousands of consumers and enthusiastically recommended worldwide).
A dentist that specializes in diseases of the gums is called a periodontist.
The book seems to cover everything from a little history of dentistry, to what kinds of gum disease there are, the degree to which you could have it, how to deal with the worst case scenario when you lose teeth and want to replace them. It even tells you how to brush your teeth, which I never realized I was doing it wrong but then I'm guessing most people brush their teeth in a non-ideal manner. They also touch on the different tooth brushes but they don't touch on sonic tooth brushes. Not common when the book was written?
This is an extremely helpful, informative book and an easy read. So no excuse for not reading it when you are able.
I have gum disease which is why I got the book from the library. I learned that I don't have severe gum disease, somewhere in the lower middle. So... certainly there are thing that I can do to help stop the progression. This book is to help you with this condition which is why I'm assuming you'd be reading it, you have gum disease.
I suggest owning this book. Good, helpful information and if you own it you can go back and remind yourself of useful details.
Like me, you probably bought this book after watching a horror show of dental X-rays and being told by a dentist that you need to go see a Periodontist. Before making that appointment reading this book will help you understand the nature of gum disease and what you need to go through to treat it properly. You’ve probably heard colloquial descriptions of a lot of the procedures described in this book, but have little or non understanding of what they actually entail or what, exactly, is being treated. This concise book, an evenings read, will explain it all clearly. Dr. Sydney has done a real public service by writing this book. While the latest edition is a bit old now (April 2026), the information within is sound.
If you are facing periodontal treatment read this book. You’ll be happy you did.
