Potty Training In One Week

Rate this book
The good news is that toilet training is very easy when you know all the tips and tricks, and there is no need for tantrums or endless hours spent sitting with a toddler who refuses to go potty. Gina Ford will teach you to know when your child is really ready, and most of all how to make potty training fun.

I have just finished reading the third book by Gina Ford, and I must say that, like her previous books, Potty Training In One Week offers practical advice on how to train your toddler. I found it very helpful, and I am looking forward to following the guidance to train my two-year-old little one.

This book was very basic and could easily have been summarised in a couple of pages. There were a few new things I learned but it was repetitive. The language of the book also annoyed me. It is not inclusive and doesn't recognise individual differences. There is an assumption that it is the mother that is doing the potty training (and all the parenting) and "your husband" "helps out at the weekend". I wouldn't recommend this book.

Suggestions are very helpful... my 3 year old had shown no interest in toilet training but after reading this I realised he might have been hindered by the pull ups he was wearing, so after getting rid of them and a few accidents - I think we are nearly there!! Good on you, Gina Ford, and thank you!!

It was nice to have step by step guide, especially since I'm clueless when it comes to babies, kids and all things related. Just like her "Contented Little Baby Book", you have to be committed and willing to spend a lot of time and effort in the beginning to get any reasonable results.

Not that it hasn't been a VERY special challenge to potty train Atticus, and we're still a ways a way from getting him completely there, we're on the right track.

Gina Ford lays out a well-reasoned and thought-through plan for teaching little children how to use the potty. The book includes lots of helpful advice in how to deal with different problems children encounter in this area. We are about to start potty training for our almost 2-year old and want to use this as a guide. If it actually works as well as the author claims, I will upgrade the rating to 5 stars! :-)

The case studies felt like the same thing over and over again which made it predictable and unrealistic feeling.
The actual advice doesn't seem to delve much into if specific problems occur, just don't revert back to nappies and use sticker charts.
I don't feel reading this book has given me any extra knowledge or made me feel more confident in my daughters potty training. If it was bought from a store with a receipt I would want my money back!

Helpful guide, but could certainly have been condensed into far fewer pages and less condescending language. Difficult to cater to individual needs in a subject like this, but the case studies do help shed a light on what could well go wrong. So far so good with our 2 year old potty training (only on day 3!!), and will stick to her principles in general (yeah yeah I get it already, never go back to nappies!!).

Why I read it:
1. Practical guide from Gina is also followed by real case reference
2. We are a first time parents who need study cases
3. There are to-dos and to-avoids
4. The book is compact, easy to read, easy to bring

What need to be improved:
1. We might not grasps what really happened in the real case reference, our understanding is limited to our own child.
2. By the end if the day, we sometimes did not follow Gina’s guidance and instead we did what she recommends to avoid.

My toddler isn't ready for potty training yet, but I wanted to read this book so that I was ready. I found the signs to look out for useful and the bit on what to buy as I haven't got anything yet. I also picked up on a few things I could do now like showing her when she did a poo her in her nappy and making sure she doesn't get anxious around the toilet.

Great little, helpful book. I've just read it for the third time :) One would think that for the third child a parent would/should already know the procedure, but that just isn't the case (or could be the middle-age dementia starting to kick in). Anyway - simple, concise but totally useful.

A very quick recap particularly useful for second babies/older babies. Would get something bigger if potty training your first child. Very helpful to get back into the swing of it.

Was more like 10 days for us but sticking with the method (after you have established your child is ready) really works. I was beginning to despair at the end of day 2 because my son was showing NO awareness of being wet at all, even when he was sitting in the puddle, but then it was suddenly like something switched in his mind on day 3. It was exhausting but glad it's over now. The method is simple and pretty clearly explained. Worth looking at if you are at the potty training stage or leading up to it.

Being a 'Contended Baby' advocate I was keen to give this a try, but in a week? Sorry, not this time! Max is obviously not 'ready' yet, even though he'll be three in two months time. The potty doesn't interest him and he hates being without a nappy - even 'Thomas the Tank Engine' pants won't tempt him... I'll leave it a while before attempting to take the nappies away again

I found all the suggestions a great help. It helps first time mums like myself to understand how to handle this new territory. The title is a bit untrue for me, as putting time deadlines on potty training, can be very stressful. It's now been week two and my little one is doing brilliantly. I am just following the signals with the help of good advice from this lovely book.

I was curious about the method and now it's clear. I agree that the most difficult one is on day one, so I prepared myself for that. Unfortunately, my kid is not totally ready so we move back to the preparation stage.

Very instructional, which was what I wanted. This program worked well for my kids, and they were trained in about a week and a half.

verdict still out on this one as not supposed to start this potty training business until kiddo is 18 months old. that's a lot of diapers in the meantime, but training sorted in one week - i'm in!

Yeah. Right. Everything sounds so easy in theory.
Don't get fooled, each kid is different.
