“7 Vital Skills for Parenting Teen Girls and Communicating with Your Teenage Daughter: Proven Parenting Tips for Raising Teenage Girls with Self-Confidence and Coping Skills” is another helpful read by Frank Dixon.

I’ve read a number of Dixon’s books, and this was the first I’ve read that was gender specific. Having said that, a number of the lessons should be applicable if you’re in need of potentially applicable wisdom while raising teen boys – after all, I was a teen boy once and recognize myself in certain of the things teen girls have been known to do.

Like other Dixon books, it speaks of modeling behavior. This is certainly something to remember here as even sitting a teen down to subtly influence behavior could feel difficult to a non-confrontational person who’s parenting; but when you remember you’re also modeling the ability to stand up and confront someone who’s acting inappropriately, it should be easier to do.

Some of the stuff is intuitive of course, but even here it’s nice to have scientific research minimally cited-to throughout. One ah-ha moment for me was just how much being an effective communicator helps throughout life not just on its own, but also for related effects like earning trust from others, making friends or helpful acquaintances, and managing personal and professional relationships.

Overall, I found this book to be quite good. Much of the information is familiar; if you've ever been a teenage girl or have a teenage daughter, you probably already understand their behaviours. However, the author does provide some helpful suggestions that make it worth purchasing. Sometimes, things that may seem obvious, like the importance of spending quality time with your teen, can easily be overlooked in our busy lives. This book serves as a good reminder to prioritize those moments.
My only real criticism is that I wish the editor had done a better job of catching grammatical issues and the occasional typo, as these distractions can detract from the overall reading experience. Also, not every parent will share the same opinion about whom their children should look up to as role models. While it's important to acknowledge influential figures or athletes, we often overlook the ordinary neighbour or family friend who lives a quiet, conventional life yet embodies kindness and dedication to their family. Such individuals can serve as some of the best role models for teens.
Although not all teenage girls exhibit such extreme behaviours as described in the book, at least not mine, I still recommend this read to anyone navigating the often challenging journey of raising teenage girls.

Let me start by saying, parenting teenage girls is not for the faint of heart – Oh my! All girl-parents can use the wisdom in this book. I had no idea that puberty could start as early as 8 or be delayed until 13 years of age. It makes sense, but I just never gave it that much thought. I appreciate the stats the author provides surrounding social media and adolescence. I think the complex concerns and challenges surrounding phone addiction, cyberbullying, and overuse of social media are rampant and hard to address with adults, let alone children.

The author presents essential parenting skills, which we parents need to be intentional with when interacting with our teenage daughters. I think parents are people and people are emotional and reactive. Knowing and using these tools can make parents effective communicators and help their teenagers grow into strong, healthy, independent adults.

This author provides useful information in a way that is easy to take in and use. I definitely recommend this book to other girl-parents.

Be involved and guide your daughter to maturity!

The author has provided us with a concise and engaging book about the challenges and joys of raising teenage girls. Dixon does an excellent job of explaining the changes that girls undergo during adolescence, including physical, mental, and emotional changes. The author makes a point of emphasizing that it is our responsibility and privilege as parents to teach them essential skills they must learn to navigate the rolling seas a girl experiences through her teenage years. Conflict resolution and communication (including listening skills), in particular, are rarely taught or enforced in schools. We teach them through our words and by being the role model they need to mature successfully. I have two grown daughters and one teenage daughter at home, and it serves as a good reminder of how essential it is to be more involved in her life and decisions.

I’m glad that this author has written more books on topics that are often overlooked.

7 Vital Skills for Parenting Teen Girls and Communicating with Your Teenage Daughter by Frank Dixon teaches basic skills that keep communication open while helping them to manage stress in their life. The more dependents we are on technology, the more stressors are involved in a life. Teenage girls face continual connection to the world, which can also mean continual judgment and opinion overload.

I found 7 Vital Skills for Parenting Girls and Communication with Your Teenage Daughter priceless. Frank Dixon gives words of wisdom many parents need to read and apply as well as their daughters. I love how the author teaches friends will come and go, learn to let go of friendships without growing bitter. Letting friendships go when someone decides to go a different path is essential and can save many aspects of your life. I highly recommend this book, but don't wait until you are having problems getting this. You should apply preventive teaching before it becomes an emergency.

I thought that this guide was pretty straightforward and overall very helpful. It's organized well with plenty of references at the end for the various studies mentioned throughout the book. Basically, this guide focuses on communication - how to keep dialogue flowing between parents and teens, how to be someone your teenager can be open with, getting teens to communicate effectively with the other important people in their lives such as friends and romantic partners, etc. I didn't find this book to overgeneralize about teenagers - I thought the author seemed to really understand teens and how they can have different needs, wants, goals etc. It's not a long book, but as a quick reminder and good support I found it a nice, refreshing read. It was good for me personally coming from a parenting style that's likely too authoritarian and giving practical ways to build a closer relationship with my teen daughter.

The author is very knowledgeable about parenting daughters. He pegged down the emotional and physical changes and how to go through them. He touches on body image concerns, abuse and empathy (which is a resounding theme in all his books I've read thus far). Recommend!

Couldn’t get past chapter 4. The writing feels more like a lecture full of “You must”, “you should”, “you need” and it didn’t have great examples for me to follow as a parent.
