When this collection of Alexandra Nechita's oil paintings was published in 1996, she was ten years old. Described as "the ten-ear-old Picasso" and "Mozart with a paintbrush", she had her first exhibit in 1994, yet apparently in grade school she had difficulty drawing simple figures, hence the title "Outside the Lines" because her paintings are expressive, vibrant, and rich, almost expulsive, except that the compositions are so balanced in form and color. She paints in the abstract cubist style of Picasso and in the vibrant colors of Matisse. Oh, and she loves her younger brother Maximillian. And her parents are exiles from Romania.
Each of her paintings is accompanied by a narrative in which Alexandra writes about what inspired that particular painting. She is a very feeling-oriented person.
She is now grown up and has a degree in Fine Arts from UCLA. I see from her website (alexandranechita.com) that she has taken up sculpture. Her Unicorn is just as delightful and "outside the lines" as her paintings.
