Crossing the Digital Faultline: 10 Leadership Rules to Win in the Age of Digitalization and Uncertainty
Despite enormous leadership efforts, financial investments, and technology implementations, only 7% of companies across industries succeed at digitalization. Combining data from 5,000+ companies and over 20 years of leadership experience, Sri Manchala deconstructs the array of forces that have torn up business ecosystems into an earthquake-like zone, now made worse by the COVID pandemic.
Crossing the Digital 10 Rules to Win in the Age of Digitalization and Uncertainty explains the new rules governing life on the digital faultline, and demonstrates how understanding those rules has powered the success of the few—while ignoring them explains how so many companies have failed despite their effort and investment.
With a non-technical and conversational approach, Manchala presents a data-driven analysis of 10 Rules that determine digitalization success or failure. Much like the laws of physics, these rules cannot be ignored or controlled, and they will only evolve to increasing complexity over time. Utilizing simple yet powerful frameworks, Manchala demonstrates the undisputable results produced by leaders and organizations who practice these rules with discipline.
Crossing the Digital Faultline shows that the single most important driver for a successful digital transition is leadership, and that the right leadership entails a seismic shift in mindset. Unifying the style mastered by the successful 7% and principles learned in the military, Manchala presents a new leadership persona for the Digital Age— the Methodical Innovator —and an invaluable 120-day playbook for transitioning to this new persona and crisis-proof leadership.

Technology as we know it has exploded in the last twenty years. Even in the last ten the leaps and bounds by which technology has progressed has been inspiring, but also a bit frightening. One of the scariest things that any business can experience is complacency: the inability or lack of desire to do more, different or better. In Sri Manchala’s book Crossing the Digital Faultline he explores how complacency can be abruptly challenged when everything as you know it changes completely. By experiencing an earthquake on a routine trip to Japan, Manchala was forced to realize that things as we know them are subject to change at any given time by forces beyond our control. One of these such changes has been the COVID-19 virus.
This is an easy to read book that can resonate with those who are without a business background. While it does come across as a guide book for those in management positions it is still a useful read for those who one day want to be in those positions or for those who are just interested in how business works. D
One of the ways in which COVID-19 has disrupted our lives is the fact that more people than ever suddenly, and without preparation, needed to start working from home. This meant companies who were unable to adapt or who had business models that were unkind to online business and telecommuting were forced to change with no notice or go under. The causes for this discrepancy from one company to the next are vast and plentiful however they all point to a rigid format that does not adapt well.
Manchala uses the earthquake and the subsequent response by Japanese citizens and businesses as an effective metaphor for the current situation. It shines a light on the privilege that those who live in areas relatively free of disasters tend to be ignorant of.
If you are looking for a great book with insight on how businesses need to grow and adapt to welcome a different economy and changing employee needs, this is for you. Crossing the Digital Faultline by Sri Manchala is a reader-friendly and business-minded manual that all levels of management should read at least once. It is well outlined, flows nicely, and brings attention to the complacency businesses, large and small, can often find themselves trapped in. Being able to adapt quickly and efficiently for a variety of situations is the key to longevity in this constantly changing world.

Manchala’s debut is a must-read handbook for business leaders in deploying the right digital practices.
A prominent researcher, consultant, and expert in digital-age business processes for many years, Manchala draws from his own experience of working on many related initiatives for almost a quarter of a century and combines data from 5,000+ companies to provides a hands-on framework to help business leaders transform their business in the face of digital disruption.
In his opinion, many businesses that have been around for a long time depend on the outdated tried-and-true operational model that doesn’t set them up for optimal success in the digital era. Comparing his real-life experience in a major Japanese earthquake to the disruptive effects of swiftly moving digital technology, he argues that the transformation that is caused by emerging digital technologies and business models is the one that disrupts the market the most as most of the business leaders fail to keep up with the modern technology.
He uses simple charts, graphs, and images to make readers understand the term better. He offers clear directions and step-by-step guidance for struggling companies to readjust their businesses by shifting their corporate thinking and business strategy and make it timely and more effective in the rapidly changing technology-driven world. With a deep knowledge of how the role of technology in digital era has changed over the last few years, Manchala outlines attributes that are important for businesses to embody in their leadership strategy. According to him, understanding the disruptive forces at play can help companies plan their transformation better.
He offers clear methodologies and strategies for digital transformation initiatives with an emphasis on outcomes. His thoroughly practical and highly effective advice work toward the goal of a business paradigm shift, encouraging business leaders to redefine their organizations to embrace changes in technology. The reader can feel Manchala’s energy through his uniquely spirited writing style which is accessible and intriguing at once, and his fresh approach of using real world examples to digital transformation makes it more exciting read than most books available on business and technology.
The meticulous research and authentic analytical data make it perfect for business owners, executives, and business leaders charged with leading their company towards its digital destiny.
The organizations in need of an operating model to help them thrive on the edge of change will be greatly benefited.

Imagine a global pandemic that causes your once successful business to go bankrupt, closing its doors forever because the expenses were too much to stay afloat. Unfortunately, we're currently living through this unexpected pandemic that is affecting the financial health of the world. Many layoffs, businesses are filing bankruptcy, the halt of traveling, and so much more, as shaped the world into something unrecognizable. The main question is, do we stand a chance of bouncing back and rebuilding the strength of our economy?
In "Crossing the Digital Faultline: 10 Leadership Rules to Win in the Age of Digitalization and Uncertainty," author Sri Manchala goes into depth in providing information and advice for leaders on how to succeed regardless of what's happening in the world. He teaches ways of learning how to be fool-proof from any potential occurrences that are out of our control. For example, he talks about the unexpected Covid-19 pandemic that swept across the world and how a large percentage of businesses and companies are suffering. They didn't think about scalability and how something that could endanger the safety of people, causing grief and destroy their livelihood. We live in the digital age and should be able to operate accordingly, which means exploring our technological options by being open-minded. By doing research, uncovering details of targeted consumers, what route of tech devices will allow you to build rapport, etc., any company can stand a chance. The author is explaining his methods on how to embrace this pandemic. It is an opportunity allowing one to alter their business, to be prepared if something like this ever happens again in the immediate future.
I am currently brainstorming business ideas. This book is resourceful in ensuring I remain on the path to future-proofing my business. The advice provided by the author demonstrates that there is always a chance to change things around. Yes, it might take some time and even more effort, but it is possible for the future of one's business. I learned so much information that I will be applying to my business in the making, in hopes that it would survive any drastic worldly changes without causing any suffering. This is a well-written, in-depth book that provides enough sound advice to keep anyone far away from the "faultline" and towards business safety. I highly recommend this book to everyone who is a business owner, as well as those in the beginning stages of becoming one.

Given how business operations have been disrupted in the current landscape, I believe this book by Sri Manchala could not have been released at a more appropriate time. The manner in which COVID has disrupted and accelerated change in what are considered industry best practices, stands testament to many of the concepts discussed in the book.
The basic premise of the book discusses the fact that businesses are currently experiencing an unprecedented shift in the way technology disrupts their respective industries. Until recently, technological innovations generally used to result in changes within a select few industries. However, we have recently witnessed certain front runners completely change the way business is conducted in an increasing number of industries revolutionized through technological innovation - Amazon (Retail), Netflix (Entertainment), Uber (Transportation), Tesla (Automobile), etc. It has also not been the legacy companies within these industries that have driven change, but small startups much more willing to use driven data to bring about change. Traditional businesses and managers should be willing to change, or else risk being left behind by the rapidly changing business environment.
The book defines digital transformation as the reinventing of a product's value proposition and using user driven data to do so. Each department in a company should be receptive and made a part of this drive towards digital transformation, in order to ensure the proposed goal is completely achieved. This requires a company's leadership to recognize and be invested in learning how technology is disrupting the existing product value proposition.
It thus becomes paramount for companies to either be industry leaders in driving change through reimagining their product's value proposition or pay attention to what their competitors are doing right and incorporate the same changes, should they find themselves left behind. As a current MBA student, many of these concepts resonate with me and I am glad I have had the opportunity to read this book before finishing business school. The changing landscape makes this book a must read for managers and students alike.

Crossing the Digital Faultline should be an obligatory read for anyone in business, especially in the digital age we live in now. It can be super daunting leaping into any form of venture without knowing 100% what you’re getting yourself into, but Sri Manchala does an excellent job in conveying what’s important to know in terms of how to adapt to the ever changing, ever evolving digitilisation of our world.
From the very start, even at the introduction, I found myself compelled to read more and more right through. For such an informative book it’s quite readable and I definitely came out on the other end feeling very well informed and even positive about diving into becoming a digital leader myself. This is especially important to me as I, a millennial who grew up with technology, have been scared of how fast our world is digitising and have wondered if I even have the ability to adapt. It’s safe to say that I feel like my faith is restored thanks to this book.
Manchala goes into impressive detail about the tactics and thought processes people should be employing to adapt to the digitalisation of business and how to stay on top. Manchala talks about these “earthquakes” business managers seem to experience so frequently, while keeping it so relevant to all of the issues we’ve experienced lately, more specifically this year. To find a book so fresh and newly written and yet so accurate is a literal godsend right now, and even the act of Manchala releasing this book at this point in time proves within itself how important it is to be ahead of the game.
Crossing The Digital Faultline is written in a way that can adapt to its audience, and whether you’re a successful CEO needing to update your knowledge or a professional in training, you’ll find this book easy to read and handy to keep at your desk or on your bookshelf. It’s structured well with memorable chapter headers so you can come back at any time and reference them if needed, and the diagrams and images used throughout also help simplify concepts.
I hope all new readers enjoyed this book as much as I did. It’s a first time in a long time that I’ve been so excited to learn something new and relevant, while actually retaining the information I read! Great work Manchala.

Crossing the Digital Faultline written by Sri Manchala is a very insightful read. In the first pages alone are intriguing because you find yourself recounting events the author experienced on a trip to Tokyo during an earthquake in 2011. At first, I questioned this wondering whether or not the whole book would be based on the author and his day to day life with tips thrown in between paragraphs but quickly found that was not the case. The earthquake is used as an analogy throughout the book though.
The author does a great job throughout the book helping the reader by teaching them how to better help their customers. He breaks down leadership skills and traits that he believes are necessary for success, lay’s out issues that companies can come across when they are not up-to-date and digitized as we are now living in a digital world. I honestly hadn’t really put much thought into the fact that things really are all digital right now. I see my grandparents struggling and try to teach them how to use smartphones and pay their bills online but it never crossed my mind that there are businesses out there that have yet to cross that threshold and make the transformation to digital. This book helps business owners understand the importance behind going digital, gives guidance, has leadership lessons, and offers examples of companies that have not adapted to the change and the issues/struggles they can, have, or will likely face.
Sri discusses in detail his 10 Leadership rules that the Methodical Innovator can enact in 120 days. What’s great about this is that these rules can be applied to those of us who are now working from home due to COVID. Which the author does speak of. There are so many people working from home at the moment because of this COVID chaos and really, everyone could benefit from reading this book. I’m not a business owner but I do work from home as a freelancer and can use these rules to better myself and the experience I give my clients. Five out of five stars. I thought the author did a fantastic job teaching the reader, his tone was friendly and encouraging and there really is a wealth of information within the pages.

The author of this book describes and explains the new rules that govern in the digital faultline, and gives insights on how understanding these new rules can improve the life of many but also not understanding them may lead to failure.
“Crossing the digital faultline: 10 leadership rules to win in the age of digitalization and uncertainty” is a book written by Sri Manchala, Chairman & CEO of Trianz and member of the Forbes Technology Council. All his experience helped him write this interesting book that may help many people. What I liked the most about his writing style is that the author keeps it simple and uses a conversational narrative that makes difficult topics sound easier, avoiding the use of technicisms.
The author teaches us how to take advantage of this digital faultline that is affecting our business and also how to transition to being a new leader for this digital age. Moreover, he explains how to create a team that can carry your organization to digital success, from strategies into execution. I found all the reading very innovative and thought provoking. Once I finished reading it, I had many ideas in my head and I spent days thinking about the book and all I’ve learned. According to the author, we can regain control and transition from being lost to succeeding in just some months; something that I think is great - knowing that we can change things in a short period of time.
Having more than three hundred pages and taking into account the topic may seem a very long read, but in fact it is very enjoyable because you are being taught all the time and there are many illustrative pictures that help understand things better. So, contrary to what I first thought, I finished reading this in a week or so, even when I re-read the parts that I thought to be the most important ones, such as “What is your choice” that deals with opportunities and crisis.
I would certainly recommend reading this book to those seeking for a change towards the new digital era. It is a very good read full of important information that will help many people who are struggling with their businesses. I’m giving it five well deserved stars.

Crossing the Digital Faultline by Sri Manchala is an informational text to teach corporations and organizations on how to cross the digital faultline and become more efficient for their customers. Manchala lays out the issue with some companies and how they are not up to date when it comes to digitalization as we are living in an ever-increasing digital world. The author thoroughly explores the issues and challenges that come with lacking meeting the digital age and even gives the reader a plan. The plan includes a step-by-step guide, with clear explanations, that can help organizations overcome the digital faultline.
Manchala did a beautiful job writing about the disparity between being over the digital faultline and not being over it. He starts off with a literal faultline, an earthquake he experienced in Japan and uses this as a metaphor to explain how companies not crossing into the way things are changing to having some disruption in their company. The metaphor was attention-catching as well as seamless. Manchala also included how they plan ahead, building their infrastructure with natural disasters in mind. He goes on to talk about how companies could also do that, making interesting.
One of the aspects of this book I really appreciated was Manchala laying out the current situation with the COVID-19 virus. In one part, he outlines how it can relate to COVID-19 and how we are currently in the midst of changing due to this pandemic that was not anticipated. This part is imperative because it is causing a massive shift in how companies operate, so people can work from home. If you are not prepared for this or adapt to the change, it could be bad news for your company. This book also includes helpful instructions and quizzes to evaluate your company and where they are on the faultline. Overall, I would highly recommend this book. While I do not have a company of my own, I found it interesting. It is also well-organized and easy to understand.

With technology and other innovations, the world is bound to change. This transformation continues to be witnessed across different sectors and industries in the world. Technology and digitalization are to be embraced by everyone. In his book, Sri Manchala stresses the importance of getting in tune with new digitalization trends, especially for a leader. I appreciate his in-depth analysis and breaking down of pointers that would help any rookie on the way to being a chief executive. The author has powerful messages for companies that want to succeed at digitalization.
There is something about Sri Manchala and how he narrates his stories. As a reader you want him to keep going as his style of narration makes one feel like they are physically present with the author. There is a lesson after every narration by the author. The lessons are either personal life lessons or professional that can help one in their career. The author may seem modest in most parts of the book, but he also does not mince his words when calling out companies that are slow to change. Having periodic targets is important for any serious company. If the targets are not achieved then the company may need a little shake up. This restructuring could probably involve digitalization, a concept that many need to be familiar with.
‘Crossing the Digital Faultline’ is an excellent book that not only has leadership lessons, but also has pointers on how to make a wholesome career. The author’s real life experiences are a great place to start learnig from. In whichever industry you are in, the author insists that one has to take note of the digital faultlines affecting the industry. Living in the digital age can be challenging for some. This book is a great guide for professionals who are unsure of which steps to take to achieve the most.

Crossing the Digital Faultline provides beneficial concepts to businesses struggling to understand and keep up with the fast-changing business landscape that is unfolding around us all.
The author, Sri Manchala, has a long history in the tech space and in business in general. He shares his experience, wisdom, and advice to others in the business world. His goal in writing the book is to provide a roadmap for change that others can follow. Through the various stages of the book, Manchala demonstrates the hows and whys of keeping up with technology, as well as all the various factors that are caused by the technological shift.
Sri Manchala starts off his book with a personal story involving a life-changing experience that had the power to change his perspective. His experience, an earthquake in Japan, showed Manchala how quickly and how drastically life as we know it can change when the very foundation up which we build our lives shifts beneath our feet. He compares this shift in paradigm that he experienced to the quickly changing tech landscape. He shows how it has changed the rules for how a company can become, and remain, successful.
In terms of writing quality and tone, I really enjoyed reading Crossing the Digital Faultline: 10 Leadership Rules to Win in the Age of Digitalization and Uncertainty. Not only is the writing upbeat and inspiring, but the book is insightful as well. Whether or not Manchala is correct in his views, it is impossible to ignore the potential implications of a changing technological landscape in the business world.
For anyone looking for answers or direction in today’s business world, Sri Manchala might just provide a few useful answers. Crossing the Digital Faultline is well worth the time and money that you will spend reading it.

It’s always easy to get swept away when a gush of technological changes come your way and if you are caught unprepared! And when an unexpected natural crisis comes added, the disruption is doubly-exponential.
Organizations across the world were already undergoing disruption and transformations in different measures and it is hi-tech industry that was leading the assault. Agile, nimble, capital, resource-intensive, and rich with talent that is driven to invent, innovate, and expand beyond the seemingly impossible horizons of customer experience, hi-tech and related industry players making headway into both allied and distant industry. Organizations that fail to realize this will be fodder for case studies.
In a fascinating narrative that began with well and truly an earth-shattering experience that led to realization on how vulnerable and fragile an evolved system and society can be, this book outlines 10 rules that leaders of organization, regardless of size, need to ingrain deep as the battle the dual disruptions of digitalization and COVID-induced disruptions. Factual and insights that are backed by data with examples that are both contemporary and relatable, Crossing the Digital Faultline provides enough fuel to fire your imagination why you must be wary of the faultlines underneath your organization’s feet.
Customer centricity, digitalization, analytics-driven insights, seamless collaboration and communication, talent transformation, and most importantly being aggressive and relentless in the pursuit of transformation is key to thrive and survive. A must read for business leaders, technologists, students, and everyone who is keen to understand what digital transformation is.

Crossing the Digital Faultline by Sri Manchala is a book documenting his trials and tribulations with his business in the context of what he learned. He starts off by discussing current events in a COVID battered world. Manchala then talks about how our businesses are switching to digital.
The author takes a lot of time to help the reader with his wisdom. I love how Manchala gives a lot of nuggets of wisdom without making them esoteric. His use of examples really helps drive the point across.
For example, within the first part of the book he uses his trip to Tokyo to cement how leaders should act towards their team. These real life examples really enhance the reading experience. His 10 rules of leading are really helpful towards any business owner, and even provided me with insight for how to work with others and myself.
Manchala goes deep into discussing these, laying out things like how to understand customer behavior or how that affects your position in the market. He also talks about COVID’s effects on each and what you should watch out for.
I’d recommend this book to anyone, from the everyday person to anyone who’s struggling with wanting to make a change in their lives. I give this book 5 out of 5 stars.

From the beginning, Sri Manchala has you assess where you are as a leader and has you jump starts where you need to be in the digital world. Crossing the Digital Faultline (Second Edition): 10 Rules Of Highly Successful Leaders in Digitalization shows where patterns that once were predictable are no longer there. New rules are written, patterns are rearranged.
As an officer in the Indian Army, Sri Manchala, he was later able to apply things he learned to be a CEO. The author is intense and driven. He sees how leaders today need to have an understanding of digital transformation. Leaders are made, and through practicing the Methodical Innovators rules, they can make precise decisions with flawless results. This book was easy to read and understand, but expect to be challenged in what you think. Do you know where you stand today in your business? How about your team?

It goes without saying that the digital world has been expanding lately, and most of all during this COVID 19 pandemic affecting the whole world. Any type of business should engage with the digitalization and latest technology if they want to provide good customer service.
Author Sri Manchala has developed this book which helps not only those involved in business in the digital transformation. The main focus of the narrative is put on
10 rules of highly successful leaders in digitalization supported by graphs,
statistics and images.
What I liked a lot about this book is that a self-assessment has been included in the last chapters. By taking this test, readers can measure their leadership style. Crossing the digital faultline is definitely a must-read!

“Crossing The Digital Faultline” by Sri Manchala is a different type of business book because it does not emphasize on leadership, it gives simple advice that helps to build popularity and success in the industry. It contains a lot of the author’s experience and that is something I really like because he knows what he is talking about.
This book contains clear and well-organized ideas, images and charts that show different figures about evolution and also an amazing writing style that gave me the impression that this book was written for me.
For all these reasons, I would like to recommend this useful book because it helped me a lot to improve my business, especially during the pandemic period.
