In the remote mining city of Acidalia, the northernmost human settlement on Mars, Chief Superintendent Dett Cassini's first watch is not going as planned. A massive dust storm smothers the city, cutting it off from the outside world. In the midst of the crisis, a man ploughs a service vehicle through the crowded city streets, killing a dozen people and injuring several more. Confronted not only with the apparent terrorist act but also with the imminent failure of the city's atmospheric system, Dett can't afford to wait until the comms come back on to figure out what happened and why. If he doesn't solve the mystery now, thousands more could die. As Dett's world unravels, he enlists the help of an unorthodox psychiatrist to find answers, the implications of which reach further than he ever could have imagined.
Rory M. Blyth was born in Fife and grew up in the town of Burntisland. He studied chemical engineering at Heriot Watt University and has a master’s degree in sustainability engineering. He currently lives in Southampton, where he worked for one of the world’s largest energy companies before moving into the waste-treatment industry to follow his passion for sustainability. In his spare time, he immerses himself in hard science fiction and is obsessed with water sports, having even represented Great Britain playing the unusual sport of underwater hockey.
His novella, Phobos Rising, combines his experience as an engineer with his love for the genre-bending freedom that science fiction provides, allowing him to blend technology with the psychological elements of soft science fiction.
