Butch Carter’s just been released from prison after serving seven years of a ten year sentence. Things in the small town of Lake Pruitt, Florida have changed quite a bit while he was away. His father is in a nursing home, the family business has been run into the ground, and his girlfriend and the son he’s never met, are now living with a guy Butch has hated his whole life. To make matters worse, Butch’s brother, Ronnie, hasn’t been seen in days. Luckily for Butch, his old friends, Taggart and Shifty, are at his side to help him find his brother and give him a hand in putting his life back together.
Different and a tad mire palatable than some others
Butch Carter is a bit more dour and reserved than Rodney Riesel’s other protagonists (in his other series’ of books, prominently about Florida and South Carolina).
Butch returns to his tiny hometown after a seven-year stretch in prison to a missing person mystery, since his brother fails to pick him up at the prison gates.
In this succinct little tale, during his first few weeks home, Butch reopens the family automobile repair business, gets beat up for reasons unclear at the time, finds out his brother was murdered, and connects briefly, with the son he’s just met.
Mr. Riesel has an incomparable ability to bring all of his people to life and I very much enjoy this talent.
Wondering if the author is writing more books with these folks, wouldn’t mind getting to know them better
Awesome work,Rodney. Your signature prose showed in the relationship with Taggart however briefly and then the story took over and displayed a new venture for you in unmarked waters as it smoothly reached a crescendo in the shootout at the end. I thoroughly enjoyed the story but will never give up all of your previous series which have dealt such pleasurable moments for me and continue to do so.
Love everything Riesel writes, but this one is special
I've read every series Riesel writes and love them all. This book is a stand-alone and is outstanding. The storytelling reminded me of Grisham's non-legal books. Great characters, oddfellow partnerships, and surprises... there are always surprises when you read Rodney Riesel. Highly, highly recommend.
I love every book by this author but this one is totally different and unexpected. It had twists and turns and a very unexpected ending. Another great book by Rodney Riesel!
Am just a beginner with the Rodney Reisel series. They are pretty catchy. Looking forward to the next and have no idea what it may be about. Looking forward to this. I get into an author only so often...
Never read this author before, and have to say I really like his style. This book was easy to read with wonderful, believable characters and a good, solid story line. Twist at the end I never saw coming topped it off..
I thoroughly enjoyed this story. I read all your books and series and this one is very surprising and clever in a real authentic way. I hope there’s more coming !
