"Nidden" refers to the German spelling of the Lithuanian town now known as Nida. This easy-to-read book helped me appreciate the troubled history of this resort town on the Curonian Spit where Thomas Mann spent three summers in the early 1930s—until the Nazis scared him away. Sounds like a uniquely beautiful place. I liked the conversational writing style and open-mindedness of the author. Frido Mann, born in the States in 1940, is a grandson of the Nobel Prize writer—his father was Michael Mann, Thomas Mann's youngest child.
