20 years later and it's mostly still relevant.

Revised in 2009, this book still has much information from the earlier edition which is not necessarily still accurate. I have been living in Ecuador for a year now and didn't find the book too helpful. It seems to concentrate on the two largest cities and may be more helpful if you live in either Guayaquil or Quito. I live in Cuenca and found the information for Cuenca to be generally outdated.

This is a pretty good guide, as is most of the series. It's the 3rd edition and there are some obvious editing errors in the book. According to two pages across from each other there are currently two presidents of Ecuador, which of course is inaccurate. But, overall, the information is good and it's a great starting place for those going to visit Ecuador or trying to assimilate into the culture.

I read this book after my visit to Ecuador and found the author had very similar experiences to mine. I wish I had read it prior to my traveling for a heads up on the customs and what to expect food wise for a vegetarian traveler. I would have taken a month's worth of power bars.

Lots of good information about the country, but the author is sexist, superficial, and biased towards the coast.

It was more for someone moving to Ecuador, staying in one city. Definitely bad if you plan on doing a lot of traveling.
