Hope Is Built: Book 5 of The Cañon City Chronicles – A Second-Chance Historical Western Romance

Rate this book
She’s running from a planned future.
Mary McCrae flees the life her brother oversees on the dairy and heads West to Colorado only to learn her aunt and uncle have died and left their farm to her. But there’s more on the land than orchards and good grazing, and others will do anything to get it. That is, if a cantankerous neighboring cowboy doesn’t get to them first. He wants the land himself, but Mary keeps falling into danger and he keeps coming to her rescue.

He’s hiding from a broken life.
Hugh Hutton buried one good woman who left him with three sons and a ranch to run. The flame-haired eastern filly who shows up on a neighbor’s farm is not what he planned to spend his future on. She’s inherited the grazing land he wants for his family’s herd, but danger dogs the gal. He doesn’t have time for a woman who’s after the same thing he is, and he doesn’t have time for second chances. Especially not at love.

Cowboys. Gotta love 'em, right? That's why I write about them and their sweethearts, whether they live in 1800s Colorado or on a modern California ranch. My personal background in rodeo journalism helps me add a bit of cowboy reality to those stories.

My contemporary books are often found under Davalynn C. Spencer.

The Rocky Mountains offer rich settings for my historical novels, from actual cities with Wild West history to fictional towns tucked into the fold where granite ramparts meet grassy plains.

I've collected three "Bestseller" labels for novellas in Barbour collections, two Will Rogers Gold Medallions for Western Inspirational Fiction, and an international first-place award for my historical romance series, "Front Range Brides."

My review today is on the Western Romance, Hope is Built. This is book five in The Canon City Chronicles. I'm a big fan of Davalynn's work and this book is awesome. I highly recommend it. It's well-written, action-packed, heart-warming moments. and intrigue. I know you are going to love it.

Mary McCrae is a dairy farmer with her own cattle but her brother is trying to marry her off to increase their herds. Mary rebels by giving her cattle to her best friend's husband to keep for her and takes off to her aunt and uncle's ranch to visit. When she arrives her aunt and uncle are deceased and she falls into an open pit in the barn. She is injured but is rescued by the handsome neighbor. Someone is trying to run her off her property.

Hugh Hutton is a widower with three boys. He really needs the property next door to increase his and his brother's herd. The property is to come up for auction soon. He rides over to check out the place when he falls into a huge pit right in the door of the barn. He manages to escape but when he comes to cover the hole the next day he finds a beautiful woman at the bottom. He rescues her but it is soon obvious someone is out to hurt the rightful heir or run her off. Why?

An exciting journey to find who is after Mary and why do they want the property? God has a plan for these two a plan for hope and a future. God has a plan for you too. A plan for peace and not for destruction. Give Him your heart and watch Him move in your life even in this time of political chaos and unrest.

This is an enjoyable western historical taking place around the time of automobiles just coming into play. Mary leaves home to escape her overbearing brother. As she arrives at her aunt and uncle's place, she finds out things won't be easy as they have passed away and their property is facing the auction block. And someone wants her "gone". As she faces lots of obstacles to inheriting the property that was willed to her by her aunt and uncle, she has to work hard to find a way to prove her identity and stay safe! As the attempts on her life continue she finds a friend in Hugh Hutton.
It is a very good book and I highly recommend it and know that the author has written many excellent books that I have enjoyed in the past.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author. All thoughts are my own.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from Booksprout and I am voluntarily reviewing it.

While this is a part of a series, you do not have to read the prior ones to fully understand and enjoy this one.

I adored the dual POV format. Seeing the thoughts of both of the main characters, really help me to connect to them so much better. It almost humanizes them.

This story was very well written. The plot flowed smoothly. The characters were delightful, especially Kip, one of Hugh's three sons. He was a charming addition to the story.

Mary heads across country from Pennsylvania to escape from her brother's overbearing desire to marry her off to another dairyman in the area. Once she arrives at her beloved aunt and uncle's farm in Colorado, she discovers that they died the prior year.

Hugh is a rancher. He wants the land that borders his. The fertile land will provide wonderful grazing to his herd of cattle. The land will be going to auction for back taxes and unpaid mortgage payments. That is until his rescues an unconscious woman in a "bear" trap pit in his neighbor's farm's barn! That woman turns out to be the niece of the deceased neighbors. They also willed the farm to said niece.

This is a delightful Christian-based faith historical romance. I would recommend this to anyone.

Hello readers of Western romance!

I'm excited to offer Book 5 of The Canon City Chronicles, HOPE IS BUILT, a second-chance, historical Western romance. Last year in Book 4 we met twin ranchers, Cale and Hugh Hutton, and the story focused on Cale in A CHANGE OF SCENERY.

This year, it's Hugh turn for a second chance at life and love, and fiery Mary Agan McCrae has just enough spunk to meet him head on. They both have plenty of loss and grief in their history, and they each want the same land but for different reasons.

I hope you'll add HOPE IS BUILT to your "To Be Read" pile and enjoy the story!

Mary runs away from a life that is all planned out for her - but it's not the life she wants. When she arrives at her aunt and uncle's property in Colorado, she finds a life totally unexpected. In her grief, she finds growing friendship, a puzzle to be solved before it's too late, and a hesitant but budding romance. This story of changing hearts and lives kept me reading from the first page, waiting for the satisfying ending, yet not wanting it to be over too soon.

This is my voluntary review of a copy I received from the author.
Great adventure!

Mary wants to get out from under her brother's thumb, but I'm sure she hadn't counted on the adventure her finds herself running into!
She's not too fond of the “irritating cowboy” that keeps rescuing her, but her kids have stolen her heart!

The characters are well done and the adventure, with it's mystery element played out well.
